Unable to launch Sonar X1 after exiting program?

Hello all,

Just upgraded to Sonar X1 Essential.  Is anyone else having trouble re-launching Sonar after they exit from the program?  I have discovered that I have to Open Task Manager, End the program, "sonaresl.exe, before Sonar will launch again!?  I am using Win7(64).

Apparently, the Sonar closes but, I guess the program isn't being released in memory or something of the sort.  Yes, rebooting will fix it but...I have found that if I go into the Task Manager, I can end it there and then reload the program.  Saves a reboot at least but I'm apparently not the only one with this problem...

I've been having this problem as well.  I thought it might be related to ben's Sonar Helper, but I don't know for certain.  I've been talking with Ben about it and we're going to test some things.  if you're seeing it and you're not using Sonar Helper then that helps to elimnate Sonar Helper as a problem.

are you running X1 in 64bit mode or 32bit mode?  I think I've only seen it happen in 64bit mode, but I rarely use 32bit mode, so I'm not sure if it's just "luck of the draw" or what.

mine seems random and sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.

IIRC, there's an issue with some MIDI devices being released correctly causing the exe to continue running in the background. Strangely I get this with x64 sometimes but not x32 version.

Due to be fixed with X1b I believe

Currently the only MIDI device I have connected is on my MOTU.  I wouldn't think that it would be as much of a problem than a USB MIDI device, but ?

dart451, as Beagle said, do you use SONAR X1 Helper? I'd like to find out for sure if it's to do with that or not. Hopefully not, but if you are using Helper then please try it again without running Helper and let us know what happens.
    Thanks, Ben

This is actually an old bug, going back to at least Sonar 8, especially if Sonar crashes or closes unexpectedly. If you look in the taskbar lower left where it shows what programs are open you may see the icon that shows when Sonar is up and running. Killing it in Task Manager doesn't always work.

Nice to see Cakewalk hasn't totally lost touch with the past with this old bug. I guess some things are too precious to let go.

It's probably not actually a SONAR bug per se. When SONAR hangs on shutdown, it's because it has made a call to some external resource that never returned.

That is almost always a problem with hardware or a hardware driver. It would be nice if SONAR could implement some timeouts so that it wouldn't be as prone to hanging, but it really isn't a SONAR issue directly. (Not normally, anyway. I don't have X1 and haven't experienced hangs on shutdown, so I'm only speculating.)

You might want to try using Process Monitor to see exactly what SONAR is attempting to do when it hangs.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

this isn't the same "bug" with previous versions, at least not for me.  in the past, as jack says, you would see the sonar MIDI icon still in the taskbar and that's not the case this time.

To kill it in the task manager completely right click Sonar.exe and select "End Process Tree"

Having said that a reboot is still quicker for me.

Are you talking about the new bug or the old one?
Because if it's the old one 'end process tree' doesn't always work.

    Now I'm confused.

New one I think. I've not had it happen before but even "End Process Tree" can take a while - several minutes hence my reboot comment. TBH it's not something I see a great deal 'cos I only ever notice it if I shut down Sonar and then re-start it without a reboot which is an unusual thing for me to do on my DAW, which is the x64 machine. Usually I'd end Sonar and then shut down completely.

Doesn't seem to happen on my laptop (x32) though.

If you're having this problem (or a similar one), please can you mention if you're using SONAR Plus (SONAR X1 Helper) or not. I'm trying to figure out if this has anything to do with SONAR Plus. I don't think it does, but it would be nice to know for sure. Many thanks, Ben.

I don't use Sonar Plus Ben, not that I don't think it's a great program for those icon lovers out there though, 'cos it's a real gem. I'm just more of a keyboard man myself.

This is one case where I'm glad you don't use SONAR Plus! I'm relieved that it doesn't seem to be anything to do with it. Thanks FBB, it's true that SONAR Plus isn't for everyone.

It's a long shot but I was having the same problem with Adobe's Premiere Elements.  The product would appear to be closed but couldn't be relaunched until I killed the process still hanging out in memory.

I found that after installing SP1 for Win 7 64 bit Premiere started shutting down properly.  So, if you haven't installed SP1 you might want to try that.

Sorry it took so long for me to reply but...the problem went away now!  I can close X1 and re-open it right away...I looked at the Task Manager and the sonar.exe file is not listed after I close Sonar.  Go figure!?

dart451:  after you installed the D44?

I've discovered that this only happens when my keyboard is on.  so it is the same problem as before as mentioned by bit above.  in previous versions of sonar it used to leave the MIDI icon in the systray, well, it no longer does that, but sonar is still running in the processes and has to be killed just like before.  and this is even tho I'm using my MOTU with a MIDI cable instead of a MIDI/USB cable like I used to have before.

    yes, SP1.

and it's repeatable.  if I have my keyboard ON then sonar won't close.  if my keyboard is off - even if the MIDI port is still active on my MOTU, then sonar closes completely.
