Wish some of you pro DAW builders were in Canada

It'd be nicer for us Canadians to not have to pay brokerage and all the fees at the border as well as warranty and tech support (not that there'd be problems but more so for peace of mind)

I say this because I've been thinking about getting a desktop DAW built (I'm using a Sager NP9280 laptop) when Intel gets their act together and those new i7's get sorted out.

I know I could probably get a good and inexpensive computer here when the i7's are re-released, but I'm interested in having optimal components for DAW use chosen and not so interested in doing all the research to figure that out, I'm also interested in it being quiet and possibly OC'd.

But I'm not interested in buying from the U.S., I did that with my Sager laptop, and I don't want to do that again. I ended up paying an extra $500 coming across the border.

What to do, what to do.......

Did the shipper charge you... or was the charge directly from UPS/FedEx/Customs?

Are you saying there are NO specialist DAW builders in the whole of Canada?

Sounds like a niche market if that is the case.

Why don't you build your own, and use Jim or one of the others on a consultancy basis? They'll get you up & running.

Can you say Biz Opp? For sure, if you have to pay import duties, sounds like that would be a cool biz to run.

The first one I built was fun, and it's not so hard. My biggest problem was with the OS install, but only because I didn't understand the correct procedure. Once I got that right, I was up and running in no time.

    Hi Jim,

It was a while ago, I think the charge came from the border, it could've been the shipper.. doesn't matter to me now though.

That's an idea though, do you do that Jim? Consultations and I could build it myself?

i ship to canada at least 2 times a week

there is the brokers fee ($40-75)
    then there is HST tax
you would pay the 13% HST tax no matter what (as in buying in Canada you still pay it)

there should not be any duties at all (Nafta) until you reach a very high $ amount

Alternatively, you could buy the components yourself and get someone local to build it for you.
