Change project key
Can I change the key of a whole project, or do I have to do it one bar at a time?
I never mess with it because I never use the staff view. Now I'm doing a song as an instrumental, and it would be nice to have the staff view in the right key for my piano player (wife).

New projects have a single meter/key setting at 1:01:000. If you change the key there, and that's the only meter/key entry in the project, it will apply to the whole project. If you have additional meter changes in the project, you would have to change the key for each entry. Go to Views > Meter/Key to see and edit what you've got.

But, changing the key will NOT force any of your written notes to change - they'll remain as you wrote them.

That only changes the first two bars. When I select all, the change and delete buttons are grayed out, only the insert button works. Right, I just want the sharps to be right. The notes are right, but there's an awful lot of sharps showing in a song in E written in C!

I'm I missing something here? If this is just MIDI you select all and use Process-Transpose. Channel 10 if there are drums should be de- elected. Hopefully this is know by all - C = no sharps E = 4 sharps

I don't want to transpose it, I want to change the key Sonar thinks it is in. My MIDI notes are correct, but the staff view shows sharps at the notes because the project thinks it is in C. There was no MIDI in the original project, this is being added to make it an instrumental.

 I don't understand. You don't need to select all or anything like that, I'm not sure what context you're using "change", "insert" and "delete"in. All you need to do is got to the Meter/Key view, and enter your key signature at measure 01:01:000 All other measures should follow this key until you insert a new one somewhere down the timeline.

If I do insert it just puts an extra measure at the start in E. Doesn't change any of the others.

when the window pops up, double click on the highlighted line that has 4/4 C on it, OR just click on the PROPERTIES ICON and change the METER
don't use INSERT

1 4/4 C
Double click this. Should pop up a box you can use to change it. Change 4/4 to what you want then hit the drop down "Key Signature" and find "4 sharps [E] (I think you wanted it to be in the key of E with the 4 sharps.)
The "1 4/4 C" should now read "1 4/4/ 4 Sharps (E)" and you are good to go EXCEPT....
If there is anything listed UNDER the "1 4/4 4 Sharps (E) like this...
1 4/4/ 4 Sharps (E)
3 4/4 C
4 4/4 C
7 3/4 C

That's why the Meter/Key view is useful. You may end up with key changes you don't want, and that's the only sane way to easily get rid of them. Once you have a clear playing field, then use Insert Meter/Key as the fastest way to insert a change wherever there is one in the song. Randy B.

I am trying to change the key in my mastered stereo track from F to G. Following the steps above, then hitting playback, nothing has changed, it remains in the same key. Any ideas, am I missing something?

Mike, you're confusing the key signature of a song with transposing and pitch shifting audio. What Old Goat needed to do was have the sheet music for a song properly notated in the right key signature. Often people don't bother with telling Sonar to display the key correctly since they're not working at all with the notation. But if a musician is supposed to play what we've written, we need it to be displayed properly and printing properly. So the info on this thread that got Old Goat set doesn't have anything to do with shifting the key of a mastered stereo track. Randy B.

Only thing I can think of is that your clicked the little "x" to close the change window instead of 'ok." Hitting playback won't show you the change. Look at staff view. Hey, are you trying to TRANSPOSE the piece from F to G? That's different. These suggestions are for changing the key signature of midi tracks. If your working with Audio track and want to transpose from F to G it is entirely different proposal. John
