Files, files and more files

My computer came with all of the Cakewalk files (except project and audio files) on drive C:.  Some are in Cakewalk Content and some are deep within my “User” folder.  I am assuming that is the default.

When I go into the Properties/Files/Folder Locations, some of the locations of the myriad files are there but not all (e.g., Libraries (which contains the vst presets).

My grand vision was to put all Cakewalk-related files on a separate disk and backup that disk every night.  But there are so many files in so many locations that I am afraid that I will screw up things if I do a wholesale move of all the files related to Cakewalk.

Has anyone done anything like this?  Or is this a mistake?   I am looking for the simplest way to recover from a disaster.  Maybe I should just back up C: every night.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tom

The stuff you would want to back up would be your "Project Folder" and your Audio Data folder.

Your project folder is probably right on your C: drive and I forget where the audio data defaults to but these two folders contain your personal non-reinstallable data.

Win 7 seems to have a propensity for filing things it's own way. I've moved a lot of stuff around without a problem but doing so creates another file. I'd like to reccomend deleting the ones in directories where you don't want them but I've been too chicken to do it.

Foillowing the Gospel Of Scott Garrigus for many years, I was able to run a beautifully organised Cakewak
set-up where I moved things into suitable folders and knew where everything was located...Scott recommended this kinda stuff for years.
As of CW  5 or 6, it became too mind numbing to organise and find stuff, so I just gave up!
The data and Projects are your gold....but I also wish there was a simpler way to save all the CW and third party preset (effects/Synths/etc.)

Use always "use per project audio folders" (preferences -> audio data)
When your projects maybe on f:\projects ...:
    1:  f:\project\0001
    2:  f:\project\0002
    3:   f:\project\0003
then backup the whole folder f:\project

We do this every day with a script in the cmd-command:
    xcopy /s /e /v /c /r /d /y f:\project\*.* x:\project\
    where x: is your backup-drive

Every project has is audiodata as subfolder within the projectfolder:

I agree this is hugely frustrating.  The installer should ask for pretty much any place that it wants to put files.

I don't want anything in my documents, or program data, or any other place.   Just in the Cakewalk folder, and the VST folder.

That's pretty much a Microsoft and multiple users compatibility thing, isn't it?

In my case, I think I've done more damage than good when I have gone in and done a wholesale rearrangement of my files.

    A word to the wise - make sure you back up your projects on separate media and that media loads properly.  I've got several projects that are frozen in time at a certain mix because I accidentally deleted a lot of tracks.  I'm not sure that's a bad thing because at least they are "done."  [:)}
