MC4 Reinstalled - new problems

OK. My hard drive crashed last week. Bought a new one, hooked the old one as a slave, and can access all my data. Reinstalled MC4 and got back to work. Now the Cakewalk projects I've made since the reinstall sound great, but I have problems with my old pre-crash projects. When I load the old projects into MC4, the audio tracks sound fine, but when I try to export the audio, it sounds absolutely terrible. Very far away, sort of tinny, etc. If I load up a new project and export audio, that sounds fine. If I start a new project and import the audio from the old projects - still sounds fine in MC4 and sitll sounds terrible when exported. I double checked my settings - 44.1 and 16 bit. I'm running on Vista, have an X-Fi soundcard and am running on ASIO drivers. THANKS!

Did you save the old stuff in MC on the new hard drive, close MC, re-open it then try exporting?

I did save it on the new hard drive and try exporting. I did NOT try saving it on the new drive, closing/reopening and then exporting...will go try that now.

Nope. Still awful. I also just tried clicking on/playing the actual audio data WAV files on the old hard drive in the Audio Data folder - every one of the audio clips sounds terrible when I just play them. But they sound fine in MC4...

And now it's getting weirder...I just tried exporting audio from another one of the projects I created post-crash and it sounds terrible, too. So something has clearly changed since I exported the other files successfully yesterday...

In MC under Options>Audio, what is listed for playback device and recording device?

Did you use the export preset "WHAT YOU HEAR" as the option in the drop down box that opens to export the project? It's in the same box where you select the 44.1/16 settings.

If it sounds fine in playback it should export that way as well.

That was going to be one of my next questions last night, if I had stayed up later.
What is the source of the export? A bus? The sound card? A track or tracks?
Are you using any of the presets?

I had never noticed  "What You Hear" before in that drop down box. I have never used any of the presets before when exporting. Should I?

What I am usually doing is creating individual practice tracks for a chorus. I am generally exporting two audio tracks at the same time. One is a vocal track I recorded directly into MC4 via a microphone plugged directly into my soundcard. The other is the accompaniment track which I create in Finale and either import as a WAV if I want to use my Garritan sounds or a MIDI file if I want to tweak the tempo changes, etc. in MC. Then, of course, if it's a MIDI, I record it over to an audio track. I usually create a full mix with all of the vocal tracks plus the instrumentals.

After trying a bunch of other things, I wound up fixing the problem by shutting everything down again, restarting again, and making very sure I was clicking all of the right settings. I'm glad it's working now, but I'd love to know what went wrong. Since I have no idea what fixed it, I guess I'm just hoping it doesn't happen again....

You must first select ALL the tracks in the project... double click a few times until ALL the tracks are dark.

Then in that drop down select WHAT YOU HEAR. I always use this preset, it assures that you get WHAT YOU HEAR in the final mix. It runs all the FX and the envelopes and everything that you hear in the playback.

I also usually use the fast bounce, because if you de-select that it takes forever to render the bounce.

So...if I'm not using any FX or envelopes, does it matter if I use "What You Hear"? I'm just wondering what, specifically, that selection will do to change my end product since I've never messed with it. And everything on the right hand side is selected - Track Mute/Solo, Fast Bounce, Bus Mute/Solo - everything. I've never messed with any of that either, just left them all at the default setting.

No, I don't want to select all of the tracks. I am only exporting certain tracks on purpose. The idea is that each of the sections of the chorus gets a CD with just their vocal part and the piano part for each song, but not the other vocal parts. It makes it easier for them to rehearse their part at home without being confused by the other harmonies. Then I also sometimes do a full mix with all of the vocal parts so that they can hear their part in context. I've been making practice tracks like this for years with pretty minimal problems (going way back to plain old Cakewalk!)  The problem this time was with the actual quality of the audio I exported - despite how it sounded in MC4, it sounded very tinny and low quality in the WAV or MP3 files that I was exporting. Still stumped.

    Kristyb,
You don't have to select all the tracks. In this case you will be exporting the parts one at a time, thus only selecting those tracks (IE, a single vocal part and the piano part) that you want to export as a wave file. Make sure you name the exported files in a way that you can easily identify each uniquely.

Selecting what you hear should render the output as you hear it, (only those that you have selected). If you want the resulting exported wave file to sound the way you hear it in Cakewalk, then this is probably the option you would choose. This option will take in account the levels  along with all of the effects etc... that you are using. This should render the levels you hear and not the levels that you actually recorded them at.  What option did you choose to export with? You will probably notice a difference.

BTW, I would probably render 3 versions per person, One with their part and the piano part, One with all but their part and one version all inclusive.

You can try What You Hear anyway; what can it hurt? And it may sound better. Make sure the track you're exporting is selected (the clips(s) will turn black), then choose the preset.
It seems something went goofy when you installed the hard drive. What that is, well, who knows?
You can also check your sound card settings. Some have a default effect, like reverb, that will also export, though why you don't hear it when playing the track...
    Anyway, something to look at.

ON the WHAT YOU HEAR preset..... if you do not want all the tracks, just a few, solo the ones you want or conversely, mute the ones you don't... you will still get a what you hear mix.

I use it always, even if there are no envelopes or FX in the project ( very rare indeed) because I know it gives me exactly what I have been hearing and working on in the mixing process. I have never been disappointed.
