One Project, Giant Picture cache

Live show, 2 hours long
Only using 27 tracks, plus 2 archived and hidden, Tons of edits
I upped the cache in preferences to the max (2000 MB)
Cleared the cache and redrew the waveforms

3.17 GB picture cache and 81 files
One of my tracks only draws a straight line
I'll live as I shouldnt have to edit that track

But still, I think something needs reviewing in Boston.

2 hours and 27 tracks, tons of edits?  I guess I'm not surprised there is 3GB+!

I have a similar issue. Would love to know if a solution is in the works. The picture cache max needs to be higher, right?

    Hey DJ,
Did you come up with anything yet?  I have a long recording (over 4 hours) broken down into 200 tracks.  I noticed the original file size was over 11 Gb when first saved. I am also having a prob with the wave forms and having to redraw. I dont know how to empty the picture cache or adjust the size allowed.  I did find info on Steves sight-digifreq, he states that Sonar is set to dump the oldest when needed automatically.  Im still kinda on hold for that but am able to continue working. Just have to redraw more and more as time goes on.

OK finally found the setting for raising picture cache.  (Pref/Configuration File/ scroll down to "PicCacheMB" and raised to 1500.  Now Im lost with the emptying them out on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Any help?

Delete all of the files in the Picture Cache folder.  I'm not in front of my PC so I'm not sure where to tell you to look for it.  You could do a windows search and find it that way.

K ill try a search in the morning.  Slipped my mind to even try a search. Thanks, ill keep ya posted

Mornin all, Im sitting here looking at it-  Searched Computer/cache. The Intitial Setting in Preferences was defaulted at 500 which was moved to 1500. On the Windows "Computer" Search I see the second folder listed "Picture Cache....Cakewalk Projects". I selected without opening, right clicked and checked properties. Indicates:
    Size: 699 MB
    Size on Disk: 700MB
    Contains: 645 Files, 0 Folders

    Selected all and deleted.
    Rebooted System
    Let system redraw

    Will follow-up. Thanks

I still don't have a fix. Every time I open the project, it redraws a few different tracks.

I know what I'd be inclined to do.

Take a copy of your project, just in case.

    Use Sonar's "Remove Silence" facility.

This will break your long clips up into smaller ones - YOU decided what is "silence" in the dialog, but you should end up with a series of much smaller clips and waveforms to match.

Thinking about tihs a little bit more.

When you've applied "Remove Silence", do a SAVE AS of the file to a new location, and make sure you check the option "Copy all audio with project"

This, I think should force Sonar to create brand new (short) wavs.

    Or is that short wave?

Tried with Sonar X1 X64 instead of X32. Works fine.

I've had ish with blank waveforms after crashes.  I found that id I click on the clip and bounce to track the waveform reappears.  Also, I have a batch file to delete all files in Picture Cache which I run regularly.

Tried with Sonar X1 X64 instead of X32. Works fine.

Sure, the 64 bit OS can see all 8GB of your physical ram - and use it more efficiently to boot - while the 32 bit struggles with (less than) half that.  For what you're trying to do, I wouldn't have even considered 32 bit.

I was having all kinds of performance issues with 8.5 and I read on the forum that emptying the picture cache helped. I went to empty mine and found over 12,000 files!!!
I deleted everything and my performance was back to normal.
Cakewalk doesn't need this cache. Redrawing the waveforms after every open doesn't cause my work to slow down one bit. The issues I had with a full picture cache folder caused me all types of problems.

FWIW I've had this issue from time to time with what appears to be a blank wave file but it plays back going back to version 8. I have also "fixed" it by bouncing the clip and/or the track. It's always a good idea to clean-up the picture cache every several months or so.

As far as x64 goes..I don't like the bitbridge effect on my UAD plugs, the animations all SUCK. Haven't tried jbridge yet though.

Many users clear their cache out weekly. Whether this is overkill or not is debatable, but you never hear them complain about performance issues.
