channel tools use

I posted my first song in the song forum

song forum

All of the comments were good, but they said that there was to much left and right, not enough center.

Comments like the kick drum and bass were left instead of center.

I used Channel Tools to give it a wider sound, and even though the bass and kick drum were dead center in the mix, channel tools made the kick thru the left only...

Is this common?    I would think giving it a wider sound, would make it still balanced, instead of placing the kick in the left only, or hearing it in the left only.

Has anybody else had this situation?

Hi, Guitarman - As Charlie said, Channel Tools is a useful plug-in - In my opinion, based on my experience with using CT, your error was to use it on the entire mix.  You can widen things, narrow things, fine tune the placement of tracks with CT, but in trying to use it as a mastering plug-in, you'll get unwanted effects like in your track.

Try using it on single tracks, widening a stereo instrument track for instance.  I use it for a narrowing the field of a piano I sometimes use which is just way too wide - the low notes are to the left, high notes noticeably spanning way over to the right.  That doesn't sound right in a mix, so I narrow the stereo field of the piano with CT without totally destroying the stereo effect of the piano.  Use it for things like that, not on an entire mix - or you can end up with the kick over to the side, as in your experience.

Yes, as Randy sez, it is a track tool.  I'm not sure about using it on a bus, even.  The main use is to give actually LR control with stereo tracks, and as a widener.  Get your mix right and you won't need it as a widener on your master bus.

Try experimenting with LCR and your mix will sound wide enough in most songs.

This could happen if you have Input mode set to Mid/Side and adjust the left/right width. It would be pretty noticeable if you did that, but it is one possibility.

The Channel Tool is a great plug-in. There's some really cool presets in it. I particularly like the 'Kill Center' one.
