How do I use a MIDI controller

This is probably a simple problem but I am sort of tech illiterate

I am using an Alesis USB/midi keyboard controller and i cant get a signal from it, i installed the driver, it is receiving power.. but i tried everything, using a midi track, audio track, etc, and messing with all the inputs/outputs but i cant figure it out.

i basically want it to be used for the cw soundcenter and tts-1 for recording so i dont have to manually input notes, which probably sounds redundant, but yeah that is my goal. please let me know what my presets should be.... thank you!

    Welcome to the forum.
Go to Options>MIDI Devices and select the USB device as your input.
But, depending on your sound card/audio inteface, you may get lots of latency (echo) while playing the controller through a software synthesizer.
Plus, the soft synth won't actually 'record'. It only plays.

    Heydak.....

    Welcome.

Yep all that and more is possible.  When you plug it in to the USB port the computer should see it and ID it.

Follow Greg's instructions to find it. INsert a synth like Sound Center (CSC) and select the keyboard as the INPUT for the track.  play a few notes and see what happens.

As Greg pointed out, the factory sound card is usually crappy. And in some cases it might not work at all (as in my lappy) with MC4/5. So if that is the case, you will need to look at something external.
