Urgent Help
Hi all, Recently I was using Sonar 8.5 producer edition and i accessed audio settings and changed the Driver from WDM to ASIO. As soon as I clicked apply a window came up saying 'there has been an error and the application must close.' Since then I have not been able to start Sonar again. The plugins will be scanned but then the window will come up saying 'there has been an error and the program must now close.' Ive got a lot of projects done under sonar so this is really frustrating. Ive got a deadline for handing a composition by Monday so urgent help needed! Id appreciate it

hold the shift key down while you click on the sonar icon to open the program. that will reset your preferences. if that doesn't work, search your hard drive for Aud.ini (it's in your documents under cakewalk, I think) and delete the file while sonar is closed, then open sonar and it will recreate aud.ini with default settings - default uses WDM.

For more help, list the audio card make/model and driver version. If it still happens after a reboot, maybe you can get past it by first disabling or unplugging the card you are using, then bring up Sonar and configure it to run WDM on a different audio device, say your onboard audio. Then bring back your audio card and set Sonar to access it with WDM as you were working before. Bill B.

I tried using shift and deleting the aud file but no luck. I opened up aud.ini and all it showed me was this [Aud] DataDir=C:\Cakewalk Projects\Audio Data PictureDir=C:\Cakewalk Projects\Picture Cache [Wave] DefaultSampleRate=44100 Is that whats meant to be there? And for the last few months ive been using a Line 6 UX1 external audio card. Its never had problems before and i know it can be used as an ASIO driver. Also bvideo, I cant bring up Sonar to change any settings which is the frustrating thing. It just crashes after scanning for VST plugins. Thanks for the quick replies though. I really have no clue what to do

when sonar starts up and the window pops up to scan, click CANCEL immediately. if it's crashing during scan then it's got to do with something it's scanning. that doesn't have anything to do with the line6 drivers. if that works, then you need to disable automatic scanning at startup OPTIONS>GLOBAL>VST FOLDERS until you have time to figure out which VST/VSTi is causing the crash. when you figure that out, delete it from your system and then scanning should be able to be resumed, if desired.

Just tried clicking cancel and still no luck. A window just pops up saying unexpected error etc. I dont know if this means anything but usually when Sonar started for me a little keyboard like image would appear on my toolbar just before Sonar itself appeared. Now it doesnt appear at all.

To disable the VST scan on startup when you can't open SONAR, edit the registry and find HKCU\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\8.5\ScanVSTOnStartup and change it from 1 to 0.

I cant seem to find 'ScanVSTonstartup.' Does it go by another name sometimes? Also Is there anyway you know of to change the audio driver settings to WDM or MME rather than ASIO without opening Sonar? Thanks again for all the help guys

Make sure you're looking in HKEY_CURRENT_USER, not HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Sorry, don't know how to change the driver outside of SONAR, but I suspect it's not a simple registry key edit.

I found it but still no luck. Ive literally been trying this whole day to try and make it work and no luck. What I dont understand is how changing to ASIO used to work for me before. Changing it this time suddenly crashed all of Sonar. As a test I tried installing ASIO4all and seeing if it made any difference. The only change is after its done scanning Asio4all's Icon quickly flashes in the toolbar and then the error comes up. and guys again I really apprecate your time. Without you id have no hope

things are not making sense. I don't understand why changing to ASIO driver mode would have anything at all to do with the VST scanner. they are completely different functions. when you listed what was in your AUD.ini file ealier that was not the full list of what was supposed to be there. was that AFTER you deleted it and let sonar recreate it? sonar recreates it immediately upon start up before the VST scan. when you delete it it creates the default AUD.INI which sets you up with an un-profiled soundcard in WDM driver mode and will give you a popup to run the wave profiler BEFORE the VST scan. so things are not making sense from your reports. where did you find and delete the AUD.ini file from? it should be here: C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR 8.5 Producer

Sorry Beagle, the AUD file I had before came from documetns and settings/program files/ cakewalk etc. this is whats contained in the path that you just showed me [Aud] DataDir=C:\Cakewalk Projects\Audio Data PictureDir=C:\Cakewalk Projects\Picture Cache [Wave] DefaultSampleRate=44100 DriverID=0 WaveInID=0 OpenInputFirst=0 SmpteMode=1 TimingOffsetMsec=0.000000 TimingOffsetBuffers=0 LatencyMsec=100 BounceBufSizeMsec=0 FlushOnStop=1 EnableMixThreads=0 MixThreadCount=0 EnableSetThreadIdealProcessor=0 AllowOfflineRenderMixThreads=1 UseMMCSS=1 MMCSSThreadPriority=2 MMCSSTaskKey=Pro Audio FreeMemOnUnload=1 AlwaysOpenAllDevices=0 MinimizeDriverStateChanges=1 RemoveDCOffset=0 EnableAsioBufferSwitchTimeInfo=1 EnableDeviceOutputLatencyCompensation=1 BitsPerSample=16 FileBitDepth=16 RenderBitDepth=32 ImportBitDepth=0 ExtraPluginBufs=0 MixDezipperUsec=50 GapDezipperUsec=500 WaveInBuffers=8 WaveOutBuffersMME=4 WaveOutBuffersKS=2 MeterFrameSizeMS=40 SyncMaxDriftMsec=2 SyncDivisor=8 ProfiledMME=0 ProfiledKS=1 ProfiledWASAPI=0 LinkSendPan=0 LinkPFSendMute=0 StopOnEmptyPlayQueue=0 KsUseInputEvent=0 WaveOutExtraBuffers=1 AutomationDecimationMsec=50 EnableSSEMixing=1 ThumbnailCacheSize=100 ManageASIOThreadPriority=1 EnableLiveADCRecalc=1 UseAlias=0 DropoutMsec=250 StartFadeMsec=0 StopFadeMsec=0 PanLaw=0 DisableIMDuringPlay=0 ShowMultiChannelInputs=1 ShowMultiChannelOutputs=1 [Conexant High Definition Audio (1 in, 2 out)] MigratedDMA=1 Name=Conexant HD Audio input InputLatencyOffset=0 UseAsioReportedLatency=1 WidePacking=0 Interleave=2 Use24BitExtensible=0 WDM.DMA.11025=11 11 11 11 WDM.DMA.22050=22 22 22 22 WDM.DMA.44100=44 44 44 44 WDM.DMA.48000=480 960 48 48 WDM.DMA.88200=88 88 88 88 WDM.DMA.96000=96 96 96 96 WDM.DMA.176400=176 176 176 176 WDM.DMA.192000=192 192 192 192 [Debug] TraceISR=0 RecBufFill=0 [DriverMap.WDM] UseWaveOut1=1 UseWaveOut2=1 UseWaveIn1=1 [SampleRates] Count=8 0=11025 1=22050 2=44100 3=48000 4=88200 5=96000 6=176400 7=192000 I tried deleting this one but even so, when I then go on to launch sonar it doesnt give me the wave profiler, it just scans for plugins and crashes again. The AUD file created after this contains only this [Aud] DataDir=C:\Cakewalk Projects\Audio Data PictureDir=C:\Cakewalk Projects\Picture Cache [Wave] DefaultSampleRate=44100 The DataDir path it specifies is empty. Could that have anything to do with it?

yousee56 And for the last few months ive been using a Line 6 UX1 external audio card. Its never had problems before and i know it can be used as an ASIO driver. ASIO is certainly the best mode for this card. I suspect that changing drivers was not the cause of your problems with Sonar. Were you in the middle of editing a project at the time?

I was. I was in WDM mode but I kept hearing some distortion during the playback so that led me to try and change the driver.

ok. did you delete it while sonar was closed and then reopen sonar? In order to help you, we have to know if you have followed the instructions you've been given so far.

Submit the minidump to CW for analysis. They'll be able to tell you what actually crashed. It may be that it wasn't SONAR at all, but your ASIO driver that raised the exception. It could even be that you don't have an ASIO driver for your interface. Have you told us what your audio interface is yet?

It could even be that you don't have an ASIO driver for your interface. That's easy to check. Just run the Line 6 Monkey.

Have you powered down with a full reboot (of everything) between these changes?
