They beat me to it - 20+ years later

I postulated this idea to a musical director (and techno nerd) about 22 26 years ago and he said "doesn't seem useful".

Today it's a Stupid Deal Of the Day at MF.

http://books-videos-music.musiciansfriend.com/product/Freehand-MusicPad-Pro-Plus-Version-4.0-Electronic-Sheet-Music-Display?sku=241190

I'm beginning to think Mooch is right about me being a stupid face.
(or am I?)

Cool device.  I bet it's on clearance because now there's iPads that will do much the same thing and other cool things...

(BTW, I'd sue for retroactive something-or-another infringement... )

    I'm a stupid face too....

Many years before that guitar you see for sale that has
the LED's that can be controlled for learning the fretboard
    was my idea.
I taught a technician that I worked with music theory and
he converted it to the binary code.
We built the prototype, got a backer, got the lawyers for
the patent search ( in Albuquerque, NM) and was stopped
    by patents from the 50's.
They said we could challenge the patents but advised us not to.
They also informed us that it was very expensive and would need
$25,000.00 to just get it started.
I had a friend in Phoenix working with lawyers and sent all the
info to her. The lawyers had the same advice.

10 years later was the first ad that I saw for it.
What we didn't know was that we didn't need a patent to
    build and sell them.
I still have all the documents and the memory of seeing those
lawyers faces when they jumped out of their chairs....it was a
    very cool prototype.

    I don't even know what it's called now...and it's in guitar
magazines....I get pissed everytime I see it. Opti Fret or something.

    (or am I?)

ya - I am right you are a stupid face

these types of devices have been out for years -  I think even mid 90's

I used to work mid west band directors convention in my 20's here in Chi town  and ONE of the problems band directors have is kids losing their music  - so they were showing off these types of music stands - would solve the problem of "lost music" -

the band director had control over everything from his conductor stand ... from rehearsal points - and what music was displayed - other details that I don't remember off hand

Band programs struggle financially in Illinois so the whole thing never took off here in Chicago because of money But I thought they were a great idea  - perhaps in other states where they actually spend money on band programs in the schools.... maybe they caught on there? ... but not here -- sadly

bapu - you are a true renaissance man/stupid face - if only you bought the patten way back then

remember this was created for a pianist (whose using both hands and one foot) or a MD/conductor.

Unless it shows those little pictures that tell you where to put your fingers it's useless for guitarists.

I was contemplating something a few years ago. At the time, I was playing in the church orchestra. And the Christmas musical stage extravaganza was coming up later in the year. Complete with page after page after page of sheet music in Eb and C# and yes...even Am.

The though had occurred to me, rather than having to turn 30+ pages of music on a stand in a dark room, and at times having to go back a few pages due to those DC Al Coda moments ..... Why not just SCAN the music into my laptop and place all the pages in order, no having to turn back, no having to pick up pages that drop off the stand, and no having to squint to see the music in a dark room...... just tap the keyboard to advance to the next page or a different key to go back.

I quit the orchestra before the event happened so I never got the chance to use it.
