Preamps in UA-25EX

I'm using the Cakewalk UA-25EX as my MIDI interface with HS7Xl and my question is how good are the pre amps in this unit?  Would I be better using an external preamp inot this?  Something like the Aphex 107 "tubessence?"

it depends on what you need from your preamp.  there are a lot of different preamps out there available.  each one has it's own characteristic, some "warm" some "clean gain" some "distorted" or "harsh"

I'm not familiar with the Aphex you mentioned, but I'm sure "tubessense" is a tube based or at least a starved plate tube path in the gain stage which any time tubes are put into the path or if the amp is made from tubes then it adds "distortion" and/or "warmth" to the signal (depending on settings).

the pres in the UA25EX are decent, solid state, fairly clean gain.  make your comparison from that about what you have and what you desire from your preamps.
