M-Audio Fast Track Pro vs Ultra

Does the M-Audio Fast Track Pro have similar round trip latency to the Ultra.  I understand the Ultra is very good, but has a lot more channels than I really need.  It also appears to be USB 2.0 where the Pro doesn't say either way.

Thanks in advance for the info.

according to Jim Roseberry the ultra has faster drivers.

    No...

The Ultra and Ultra 8R are the only M-Audio USB units that provide low round-trip latency.
    5.5ms RTL at a 64-sample ASIO buffer size/44.1k
The RME USB units can go down to a 48-sample ASIO buffer size... which yields 4.9ms RTL @ 44.1k.
The Cakewalk/Roland VS and OctaCapture units (with latest driver) yield 7.2ms RTL

    Hi Jim

    My FireFace UC gives me  4.9ms RTL measured with CEntrance  3.7 under Windows 7 X64 @ 24 / 44.1k

    I gather you are getting 4.3ms with your BabyFace ( ? )

    - are you running Wind 7 X64 ?

    - measuring with CEntrance 3.7 ?

Given the BF and UC both have the same Safety Buffer  [ 32 Samples ]  any idea why the BF is  0.3ms better each way / 0.6ms total ?

I know I'm " splitting hairs "  but at such low latencies, a differnerce of   0.6ms in total is actually very significant - ie: a full %12 quicker overall.

Maybe  it has something to do with the different converters used - the UC uses the AKM 4620 Codec and the BF uses the AKM 5385 AD and TI PCM4104 DA ?

Any tricks / particular settings you are using Jim ?

    All the best,
    Tom

    Hi Tom,

You are correct (and I've corrected my post above)
I had tested RTL at different sample-rates and ASIO buffer sizes...  comparing to my MOTU Firewire units.
    Got my figures crossed

The 4.3ms TRL figure I mis-quoted is when running the RME USB units at 128-sample ASIO buffer size/96k.
(128-samples is the smallest ASIO buffer size offered by the MOTU units when running at higher sample-rates)

    My apologies for the confusion!

I have a Fastrack Ultra 8R and a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40.  I bought the 8R after the Saffire Pro 40 died and I though it was going to be a pricey repair ($400 est and I only paid $425 new) but fortunately I was able to repair it relatively cheap.  The Ultra 8R has much lower latency but the Saffire Pro 40 has better preamps that the 8R and thus my primary unit.  The Saffire Pro 40 does not "color" what is input where the 8R does slighly change the signal (e.g. a guitar input will be slightly more on the treble side when recorded through the 8R).  When you are working with "clean" guitar signals or a vocal it's obvious, if you were working with a "distorted" guitar it wouldn't be noticed.

I have the Fast track pro and it is so slow I can play a chord, go outside to check the weather and come back to listen to what I just played!
And I agree with Fireberd, Probably same pres on all M audio products and they are next to useless. Thank goodness for SPDIF and my 01v.
The round trip latency is not an issue for me because I don't use real time efx or monitor the back end. It would be nice.

Of them had a little more bandwidth but they still taste I squeezed a little seemed to. Id use them if I absolutely had to, but I will reach the first first. The two XLR / TRS combo jacks, which means you are either a mic or a plug-in.
