Piano roll users please comment

Browsing around to find Piano Roll tutorials, tips, and such. And I come upon TheodorKruegerMusic at youtube.

On this page http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRVfdrXjrrg&feature=related he is using S4 very quickly. This is a recent upload.

Below are comments from viewers. How do his comments about how S4 is faster than 8.5 relate to SX?

Nice lesson) But why, for the love of God, are you using such an old version? I believe it must work much faster then the last Sonar (which i hate for that), but have you tried Reaper for example? It's not expensive, has a 30-days trial and light enough to compete with Sonar 4.

I'm using this version because after Sonar 4 they changed the velocity editing pane. All the controllers have some handles on each peack that doesn't allow you to draw as easily. Also there are a lot of problems in the piano roll editing as well such as midi track colour overlays adding up, brighter colours, more cpu usage. I will hop onto the next version of Sonar as soon as they have some "Sonar 4 layout" option or functionality. Reaper is not so fast for piano editing as sonar.

Can you be more specific, because editing in 8.5 looks very similar to the version you have.

Sure, 8.5 is very similiar, but has many differences at the detailed level. For example, when you press S, E D to draw notes, sometimes the cursor does not change back to the pencil so you lose some time there. When you are trying to draw controllers as shown in the video, using the Shift to draw line and curves in stages, the mouse always sticks to the last handle in the midi data so it's difficult to draw. Also, to change controllers you need to move all the way to the top..

@Architectonic01
--- to move all the way to the top of the screen and select "velocity" and open a dialogue box whenever you need to edit some controller. Also there is a yellow info box each time you insert a note taking unescessary attention from the screen. You cannot simply select five midi channels, open piano roll and transpose them because they get deselected. These are some of the things I have noticed in the demo version of Sonar 8.5.

    This was discussed recently here:

    Not sure all your questions are answered there, but it's a good place to start, and you can resurrect that thread if necessary.

    Cakewalk, hire that man!

    In Sonar X2 I wish to see an efficiency-optimized piano-roll view designed with the help of Theodor Krueger.

    He reminded me of the reason why I became a Sonar-user in the first place, the piano-roll. The earlier versions of Sonar may have had, at least in my opinion, the fastest and most efficient piano-roll of any DAW at the time, perhaps of any DAW ever(?), but I haven't kept up with what the competitors have been doing to theirs, so I can't say for sure. Listen to me, becoming all nostalgic and s***.

    I think he has some valid points in his criticism of the newer versions, though. My, perhaps controversial, suspicion is that the people at Cakewalk in many ways don't understand how good their product actually is, and why, which sometimes becomes evident when they make changes to it.

    after Sonar 4 they changed the velocity editing pane. All the controllers have some handles on each peack that doesn't allow you to draw as easily.

    To do this in X1, use the Draw tool.
    Freehand and Line both work.

    I hope this helps!
