'Fatten up' Guitar Track

Hello all.

I am using SONAR Producer 6.  I recorded a guitar track with my Peavey 6505 112 60W 1X12 Tube AMP going into my M-Audio Fast Track Ultra USB 2.0 AI Line In.  The sound was rich and thick when I was playing.  However, when I listened to the recording in SONAR, it sounded 'rubbery'.  So two questions:

  1. Is it better to record guitar amp tracks with a microphone or line in?
  2. Any suggestions on how to 'fatten up' the track I already recorded?
Thank you

depends what you got for inline plug ins for guitar..as long as you have the right microphone..there should be no reason you cant replicate the sound..you need to find the sweet spot dude..move the mike around till you find it..usally its af axis 30 degree.slightly off your cone.hope this helps

Huge topic! You need to experiment with every possible combination until you get the sound your want. Every amp/guitar/efx box/mike /speaker cab etc is totally different, there is no magic solution that works every time. One thing I do is put my extention speaker in another room and then either using headphones or the monitors I can hear what is going to tape ( whoops, well you no what I mean)
There are DI boxes that sound amazing and there are overpriced pedal boards that will suck the tone out of the best axe.
If your amp sound great then thats a good start. It will take experimenting with the mike to capture it. The line out often bypasses the second tube stage and the speakers which play a critical roll in the sound. I have a line out on my custom made Fender Princeton that is a tap of the speaker output so it's real close,  I often use the mike but it's hard to be in the same room while tracking. Some people build a isolation box if they don't have the luxury of a extra room.

I don't really go for turd polishing a track that sound badly recorded, I just do it again.

i don't particularly like "fat" guitars in a mix. They just take up too much room.
But, I don't really know what a "fat" guitar sounds like. I don't know what anything "fat" sounds like for that matter. Full yes, Fat no.
If it's like drums, bass, guit, then a little "fatness". But the term "fat" implies lows and low mids. Both of which conflict with the bottom of the tune.
But, then again, to each his own.
