8.5 vs X1 / Would You ?

Make the upgrade knowing what you know now and is it worth it or more of a PITA knowing what you know now ? Is there a link that shows what the differences are and if users like it better or worse ?

PS. Been away for awhile

For some users, the shortcomings of X1 are not an issue and it is a useable product.  For others the problems are a roadblock and they are waiting for the fixes.

The answer to your question depends on the particular user and their use of the program.

Thanks for the reply Fireberd and have to say I envy you some. Absolutely want a Steel bad and will have one,- one day. Using a Digitech 2101 right now but it's not like the real thang !

I'm pretty happy right now with 8.5 so think I'll hang until the bugs get fixed.

I like it a lot better than 8.5.   I have almost tripled my production speed and have had more songs passed on through my publisher than I ever did with 8.  There is my testimonial!

Although it frustrates me to see how many things are left to be fixed.  I like X1 100% better than any previous version.  The potential is enormous.  I love the new interface and workflow. The Control Bar. The Pro Channel.  The Smart tool. The tool hud. The fact that you can hide/show the control bar. You can float the inspector. The list goes on and on. The Pro Channel alone to me is worth way more than the cost to upgrade.  I still think they should've waited to release it until it had been tested more and bugs had been worked out, but they can't unring that bell.

I see similar comments on other forums about PT9.  One comment on gearslutz said it was going to take PT11 to get all the bugs out.

Bule, the only way to get pedal steel guitar licks is with a pedal steel guitar.  I used to try to get pedal steel licks with a guitar (I had a Chet Atkins Gretsch at the time) and finally gave in and bought a pedal steel.

    Re:8.5 vs X1 / Would You ? 2011/03/11 07:54:21 (permalink)
For me personally, it is an easy answer and that is yes I would upgrade to X1 because I am not experiencing the types of issues that other fine people here are experiencing.

Now, we tend to record a lot of audio material.  Using Superior 2 drums for most of the drums parts (which aren't audio).  I also use more UAD plug-ins then some of the plugs that people have mentioned (like the delay bug) so I might not be experiencing that.  Lastly, I use Melodyne (not V-Vocal) simply because it is the best vocal correction software on the market.  I have applied the Pro-Channel on a couple of projects, but I don't have the same issues others have been seeing with it potentially corrupting a project.

So, as you can see I'm probably not a typical user because I don't use a lot of the stuff Roland provides in the product (like V-Vocal, Session Drummer, Sonitus plugs) as I like the other tools I've been using.

Why don't you describe your setup and what/how you record?  We might be able to say "go for it" or "be careful of ______ until X1b".

I can do single string and a few 3 string bends and do overdub some which sounds pretty good but nahhh.
What type do you think I should start out with as a noob. I am an Amp Tech and have worked on a few Steel SS Amps for a steel player down here so that part is covered.

Thanks to everyone who has replied as I really trust you people for great info as always.

There are many good brands of Pedal Steel Guitars available, I would start with a modern "all pull" type mechanism.  Considering your location, there is a steel guitar shop in La that would be worth visiting.

I'll gladly take the issues I've come across over 8.5.

The look and feel and functionality of X1 is priceless to me. The bugs are annoying and my band mates get a kick of me screaming at the snap to grid and metronome settings every 10 minutes, but I would still upgrade.

The main reason I upgraded is because of Pro Channel. As soon as my friend showed me that (He bought his PC and Sonar based on my experience), I went home and purchased the upgrade.

Based on my experience I'd definitely upgrade. It is a different program to 8.5 with lots of functions either working differently or different methods.

Some seem a bit illogical at first but I've found that they really make sense once I've grasped the newer concept. My workflow has speeded up, the prochannel & screensets alone are worth the upgrade IMHO.

There are a lot of bugs, several that shouldn't have got past beta, but I've found work rounds for most or know what to avoid to not see them at least. X1b will be out within the next couple of weeks and if that fixes as much as it looks like it will without introducing more I think it will make X1 a really great program.

    As always though YMMV.

I really liked X1, already have my... But I haven't went deeper into it because the VS 700 system and, til know, it is all buged... But I believe X1b will fix the most part of it... Can't wait any longer... we are, almost, in half way of march, wich was the month CW promised to release it.

8.5.3 works fine to me, and very well integrated to VS 700... I hope not to get my self in the middle of a dilema.

    Peace.

I would not right now until X1b is out and the reaction is known.  This could be perhaps three weeks from now.  Why load a new program now when 8.5.3 works great and X1B may be free of most bugs soon.
