Sonar X1 MIDI Problems Help Please!

Hi,

I've just upgraded to Sonar X1 Producer from Sonar 8.5.2 Producer.  When I open a project created in Sonar 8.5.2 I notice that the MIDI synths (VST) are running slow..Some of the midi tracks are fine but about two of them namely (Realguitar and Absynth) are having latency problems on playback.  I know this is probably a problem related to MIDI setup but I don't know what it is that I need to change to rectify this problem.  The MIDI interface (keboard) also seems to be having latency problems.  Either that or somehow Sonar X1 has repositionined the midi tracks?  Although they appear to be in the right place...I'd be grateful for any advice...sorry I don't know how many ms the latency is..

My Setup:

Windows 7 64bit
RME Fireface 400 Interface
Sonar X1 Producer Edition 64bit.
Intel Core Quad Core Processor 2.4GHZ
8.00 GB RAM

Thanks in advance

Amar

You've got plenty of ponies under the hood - so I would look at Audio settings, not midi.  Make sure first that you have the latest drivers for your interface, then make sure you have selected the correct timing and playback masters (if you have on board audio make sure it is not available for use) and then check your latency settings and buffers in your ASIO panel.

    Hi, Thanks

I've just checked the audio settings and the interface is selected correctly.  I have no ASIO panel as the interface used WDM.  What should the buffer and latency settings be in Sonar and the audio driver panel?

    Thanks

You should probably be using ASIO, not WDM if available (and I think it is!)

If you are going to use WDM, have you run the profiler?  Have you moved the latency slider as far left as possible- you should report 5 ms or less.

The thing is I have always used WDM as the drivers have never worked under ASIO,  I used to try to it under ASIO mode but I get no sound.  I have run the profiler and moved the slider as far left as possible in order to get clean audio.  5ms doesnt work but 40ms does give an output.

I have just checked the box labelled 64-bit precision engine and I think the latency has gone...could this have been it? I have no idea what this does btw!

Hi just switched to ASIO now and I seem to have fixed the latency problem but now on playback I occasionally get  cackling noise,  what should my asio panel settings be set too?

    thanks

by the way my buffer is set to 1024, this is the only way i get minimal crackles, but they still exist!

    thanks

excuse my lack of knowledge! but how do I check what the latency is reporting?  do you mean what it is set to? or is there a way of checking what the latency is?

    thanks

    Prefernces(P) - Driver settings

at the bottom under the asio panel is the listing of the latency info.

Wow, latency of 49.6 msec is way, way too high...it's off the charts, really. My latency reading on X1 Producer is 5.1 msec/224 samples (i've got a Core 2 Quad Q8200, 4 Gig DDR3, Win 7 X64, with an RME multiface and several DSP cards).

Have you tried using the program called DPC Latency Checker? Or, better still, Resplendence LatencyMon (v1.0), which includes driver- and process-specific info that will help you locate bottlenecks on your PC.

If you check out the SOS forum, under 'PC Music' you can find one or more threads on how to use LatencyMon to troubleshoot latency problems.

    That's pretty high for recording/playing.
Lower your buffer size (mine is at 128 on a much slower rig with less ram) and see what happens. Sometimes it takes some tinkering to get it right - some use different latency settings while mixing just to make the audio device less stressed!

buffer at 128 is just distorted, 512 causes dropout, the whole thing only functions properly at 1024 even then it has crackles and pops. What other settings can I change on the ASIO panel?

Are you sure you are using the latest drivers for your Fireface? You are in 64 bit, right?
It may sound cliche, but you should not be having these problems (even with X1.) Have you been using this device for a while?

the playback timing master is listed as fireface adat in the driver settings whereas the record timing master is listed as ASIO fireface analog, could it be that?

Can you make them both ASIO?  If so -  that may be your problem.

no the option does not exist! only adat is showing on playback timing master....one for the hotfix?  but the hotfix doesn't list RME as a problem card so i didn't want to risk it..what do you think? :

    More midi problems!
I have upgraded to Sonar X1 and has received an unexpected problem.
I can play midi channels with different VST plugs and can play VST plugs with my midi keyboard, so far, so good.

My problem is I can not record midi!?
I get the indication that the Sonar receive midi signal but nothing sticks ...
Anyone have any suggestions on what it could be?
