Boost 11 + What happened?
Hello all. I generally don't use Boost 11 in SONAR, I usually need it for the final mix which I do in Sound Forge. Yesterday all of a sudden, when I go to use it in Sound Forge it locks up the app so I thought it was a SF issue. However, I tried to use it in SONAR and it too locks up. What gives. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it to no avail. Anyone else have this issue and know how to fix it? Thank you.

That's good, now you can move onto a better peak limiter. Boost 11 isnt all that. It lacks the fundamental control you need form a peak limiter and its very harsh Cj

Any recommendations for a cheap/free better limiter, or do you have to invest in an expensive one?

Ha ha, I like CJ's answer, right on brother! My heart would be broken if I lost Boost 11? not! The best thing about it is it's name! That was creative thinking at least.

A paid alternative to the FabFilter Pro-L above is Voxengo Elephant, which I use a lot and get good results from. On the freeware front you may like the W1 Limiter.

I read the full review and SOS do believe it's a real game-changer; saying how mastering will in future be known as being 'before' the advent of FG-X and 'after'. I'm sorely tempted to purchase, even though I've just started to use FabFilter ProL (which I was lucky enough to win in a MusicTech magazine compeition!) and I'm extremely impressed by it.

Seems you can download all the fab product for a trial run. Just get a nag screen when opening a project that they are used in. Was just having fun with the Tape delay gizmo.

I've tried the trial of fabfilter too and it sounds much better I have to admit (yes I was using boost 11 too), but at £160 for a compressor I have trouble convincing myself to pay that much when it's just a hobby. I guess you have to ask yourself how serious you are.

I downloaded Fab and tried it on a song - worked better than anything I had including UAD-2 stuff. Cool interface. Are we entering the 64 bit zone when all the old plugins get major heat from upstarts who drop the dsp/ilok world of the 90s?

Reality check. 20 years ago, You would have had to cop up the $$$ to purchase any of these devices. You would have spent a good part of a day driving to a store and physically picking it up to take home. Later we could order through catalogs and then over the internet. But you still had to purchase it to try it. Some of those devices where( and still are) well over $1000. We have become so spoiled, Now they are free to try! If you like something and it's a good tool, @ $150 bucks that's a bargain.

Fabfilter Pro-L is truly outstanding, but hardly falls under the "cheap/free" category as requested by an earlier poster. It's actually a little pricey. I demoed it and absolutely loved it. But I couldn't justify the price, given that I already have Ozone. Ozone's limiter is at least in the same league even if Pro-L is a little better. Fortunately, there are lots of usable free or inexpensive limiters out there. For no-frills clean functionality, try George Yohng's W1 limiter. It's superb. For something closer to Boost11 only better, try the free LoudMax. Does what it says. If you're looking for something to make a track loud and dirty, MeldaProduction's free MLimiter is excellent. I use it on vocal busses for in-yer-face gritty presence.

The Brickwall limiter and Classic Clipper from IK Multimedia are really nice as well. Not to expensive either. A really cheap one is TB Barricade by ToneBoosters (only €10), I used the freeware version from when they were Jeroen Breebart a little and it was not bad at all.
Sadly very reduced studio equipment as it is... ASUS G750J, 8 gb RAM, Win8, Roland Quad Capture.

Just curious if v4 is better than the rest and improved on many things maybe. I really stopped using Ozone 3 when I discovered the poor result of limiter compared to even free alternatives like Kjaerhus Audios. Bass really became strange and bumpy and no real defintion with Ozone as I felt. I had Ozone 2 and 3.

Ozone 4 adds another Intelligent Limiter mode that works pretty well. I prefer Voxengo Elephant 2 on most material, especially rock. Ozone 4 also introduces a few very nice things. First, they have global mix controls, which makes it easy to have only as much of something as you want. Second, they added mid-side capability to most of the processes. This can enable you to treat the middle of the mix and the left/right (side) differently. I find this especially helpful when using compression, choosing to warm up a mix, etc. They also added another style of warmth. I think that's most of the differences between 3 and 4. Peace, Tunes
