Assuming you have enough disk space, you should have no problem. Exactly how much disk space a double album will take up cannot be predicted, but if you have enough space to allocate about 10 GB per song you should be OK. Hip-hop probably takes less due to sparse instrumentation.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

I can't tell because you didn't tell us how much disk space you have.

Sorry, that D-drive is not a HDD you can use for recording. It's the safe-vault you can use for system recovery. I think that system is only used in laptops (?). So you have only one HDD. It is very recommendable to have two HDDs, one for the system and software, the other for projects, audio and sample libraries. It might be worth it to buy an external 7200 rpm HDD. I'm sure it would make your work easier.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

ok thanx. i only use this pc for music mostly and all my sample libraries are on my drum machine hard drive...i mostly record my songs in my mv8000 then track out into sonar with a vocal plug in,plug in on bass and a final plug in on master...so im gathering my main focus is on disk space? so my last question(sorry) is whats the better choice in my situation as far as adding an external drive or upgrading my existing hard drive to 2 tb?....... http://www.amazon.com/Wes...02ZCXK0I/ref=pd_cp_e_2

Never use a WD Caviar Green series. The green series is a variable speed/rpm drive that supposedly will spin up to 7200rpm but the jury is still out on that. The black series is MUCH better!

Most of the majors (HP/SONY) have OEM OS's and put them on a D: partition. That saves them printing up a DVD or two w/ the system stuff on it. You can burn your own (1 time, usually) or buy one from the manufactuer. Burn your own, or if you have a crash you lose the OS and drive. If it is a laptop, you'll need a 2nd, external hard drive for best performance. You dont' really want your system drive doing system work, running your DAW and burning audio tracks and playing them back. A USB or FW drive should be fine, tho I haven't used an external drive for that. Just get a drive that doesn't use the same interfacing as your sound interface. They are dirt cheap and will hold enough info for all the tracks you'll need to record a double CD, unless each song consists of hundreds of solid recording. @

And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

You have more than enough space for what your doing. But a back up external drive is a good idea for backup. You hard drive crashes and you loose everything. I don't see the point in recording to an external drive when your computer is fine tuned to run a DAW and the one drive is kept tidy. You have 600 Gigs! use it. Make sure it is a 7200RPM. I use an old Acer laptop with only one 7200RPM 200 gig hard drive, There's a lot of songs in there, Over 30 , most are 8 to 15 tracks audio and the MIDI too. In my Cakewalk folder I store anything to do with my music, MP3's, Masters, my lyrics, All my MIDI stuff, See below I havn't even hit 20 GIGs! I only record at 44.1/ 16 bit so just figure the most I could have used by now would have been 100GIGs. Most important is to keep your hard drive running smooth with regular de fragging. Also with laptops turn off wireless card and battery management. Run the dpclat meter to test for latency from background stuff. Before I turn off my computer I always back up to the external drive, Most of the time this then is transfered to my desktop system for further work. So I most always have 3 copy's of everything.

The ideal situation is to run 3 internal drives. obviously this can't happen with a laptop, but for a desktop, the setup would be: Drive 1 - Operating System, Programs & plugin dll's. Consider getting a Solid State Drive (SSD) for this Drive 2 - Cakewalk Project files, along with all associated audio Drive 3 - Sample libraries Then augment this with one or 2 external drives for backup purposes.

Chuck- It depends on weather it's a desktop or a laptop. Drives are cheap. So a desktop system should have at least 2 drives or as B_J has listed above 3 is better, Make sure you have a good power supply first. Modern SATA drives make this so easy now. Still an external back up is a good idea as in a worse case scenario your studio is hit by lightning and all 3 drives are toast. This can happen! Laptops are most always one drive, If a second drive shows then it is most likely a partition. A Partition will still mean only one head, so no improvement in performance is gained, and if it crashes there is no back up. So with a laptop there's 2 ways you can go. depending. A lot of cheaper laptops still have slower 5400RPM drives. It is documented that to record at 24 Bits you really need a 7200RPM drive. There fore an external 7200 RPM drive would be the way to go. But If your laptop sports a 7200 RPM drive, and you only use the computer for recording, I'd go with the portability and dependability of the internal drive. I then back up to the external drive SAP. My main reason is I want to give that USB buss nothing to do while I'm recording. Just my interface. Might be illogical, but I'm a little leery of what a USB buss can handle. Every laptop is a different in the way those USB ports are configured but mine is just one controller. As I said Hard drives are relatively cheap, I replace my Hard drives at least every 2 years, sometimes sooner if I lust after a faster/ bigger drive. I use the old drives to store DATA. Either as second drive, put them on a shelf or use them in external drive en closers. I still have my first 10 Gig drive from 2001. I have never lost anything to a crashed drive and I've had my share of dead drives.
