Sonar currently the most popular DAW?
That's what this report implies: http://www.digitalmusicdoctor.com/popularity/index.html From the report: For the first time in the five-year history of this analysis Avid Pro Tools fell out of the top position and was replaced by Cakewalk Sonar. You can come here to praise it or to bury it (I'm going with the indirect Ides of March reference here), but personally, I like working with software that is popular. There's a good chance it has a future in general, and thereby a future with me. Here's to a future!

Digital Music Doctor has some strange ideas about DAWs IMO. They base DAW popularity on search engine queries? I think that is a bit of a stretch but let's check the figures anyway: http://www.google.com/tre...mp;date=all&sort=1 According to that, "Cakewalk Sonar" or "Sonar X1" hardly registers compared to Pro Tools. Look at this one: http://www.google.com/tre...mp;date=ytd&sort=0 "Sonar" in general, which includes any normal mention of sonars, even generates only a bit more search volume and news volume compared to Pro Tools. I think that really questions Digital Music Doctors conclusions. Also, why don't they just give full disclosure of all the data they used to come to these conclusions? They always allude to stuff but never really spell it out which IMO disqualifies them as a reliable source. UnderTow

Basic statistics. The sample size is not fixed nor are the number of groups defined therefore there is nothing conclusive you can derive from the poll. For example when I was involved in research many moons ago. We would define a sample area size called a hoop/ring then take repeated sample hoops across a species population area. The species that came up the most often across the hoop samples would be a dominant species. In the case of this poll, it would be as if a researcher walked into the forest and shouted "Hey who is the most dominant species?" Your results would come from those species that either heard you, and from that group, felt like responding or those who happened by. A population that happens by is not a valid sample set. Now, if they had a list of even 1000 DAW users and reached out to those who didn't find their site that might be more representative. It would also eliminate users calling their friends to skew the poll.

DMD has some interesting reviews, and their tutorials are not bad. But there is no way Sonar is anywhere ahead of PT, even just for music production (that's ignoring PT's role in post etc). Maybe people are buying more of X1's videos instead of PT as they can't get X1 to work. j/k ;)

Is there really any way to get any kind of reliable data collection for this kind of stuff? AFAICT the best result of it is firing up a DAW's user base to go spam the polls or get into a rant-a-thon about everybody else.

What difference would it make (which is the most popular)? Wouldn't you just use the available tools at your disposal to make the best sounding music you possibly can?

What an ar*****. The guy is just promoting his books/videos with a press release styled post to get picked up by Google and the stupid mainstream press. How could X1 be the best DAW - it still only works for Scott and the chosen few. You'd only have to read the blood on the tracks in this forum and GS to know we all want it to work but it don't yet.

It also depends on which continent you're considering. UK recording magazines have mentioned from time to time how Sonar has a much higher market share in the US than in UK/Europe where Logic and Cubase took a early leads. A lot of CW's strategy in devising X1 is aimed at addressing that. Interestingly, a popularity vote on MusicRadar.com put Sonar 4th compared to Logic at 3rd and Reaper at No.1. With ProTools at 9th place I think this poll says more about the followers of MusicRadar than anything else! http://www.musicradar.com/tuition/tech/the-11-best-digital-audio-workstations-238905/8#content

1. I think they are talking PC only..... 2. Take reviews with a grain of salt. Example: Adam and Focal get great reviews. Now try and find a single person who hasn't had problems with these monitors right out of the box. Complete crap IMHO....
