Need a new control surfaface with 64bit support
Hi all, I currently have a Yamaha 01X control surface unfortionatly it is a Legacy product with no 64bit drivers for Vista or Win7. I know about the V700 system but cost is a factor because I also have to upgrade my computer sysrem as well. My budget for the control surface is $1500. I have been folowing a trend and it seems that with products like I-Pad and Motorola Xoom it seems wise to look in that direction as well as the tradional hardware surfaces currently on the market. While searching various manufactures I am seeing more and more products reduced to Legacy status. Like Alisis Master Control, Euphonics MC Control and Artist Mix (now part of Avid) and Sweetwater says is discontinued. When I bought the Yamaha 01X which is a firewire mLan system I thought the product would keep up with technology But Yamaha discontinued and stoped supporting it about 2-years ago!! (To bad because it really is a nice product and works well with X1/a). I recently got Spectronics Omnisphere and will be geting Sample Logic Cinematic Guitar both are resource hungry and my poor system is struggling. So now I have to move to a 64bit platform and rebuild 2 systems at the same time (ouch!!!!). Any help and advice is welcome. Thanks, mpop Music is Life

The Alesis Master Control also has Xp/Vista and Win7 32/64 bit drivers, but yes I see it is discontinued. I found the Master Control very reasonably priced, well built, sounds great, and it just works. Don't know where you are, but the Master Control is probably within your budget. I've used it on my old XP/32 system, and recently upgraded to a new i7/Win7/64 box. 64 bit all the way - MasterControl - Windows 7 Drivers [v3.5.3.8671] These drivers add support for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7. Updated by Alesis 06/16/2010. Cost me about $1900 NZD when I bought it, and I see sweetwater.com currently showing as on special at $899 USD. Good luck, hope you find something good. Cheers - Cliff

The MasterControl is a real sleeper for the money. I have had a love/hate relationship with mine, almost swapping it for a Faderport and Alphatrack both of which I own. I keep coming back to the Alesis though especially since I figured out how to use it as JUST a control surface /Monitor controller and use my M-Audio Delta card as my interface because I get better reliability at 64msec with that card and VSTi. It has 64 bit drivers and works rather well.

For now the most cost effective control surface for any DAW is... BEHRINGER BCF-2000 It acts like Mackie Control, just without JOGwheel, and due to its buttons - with some limitations and "shortcuts", but it runs with Sonar very, very well. No matter 32 or 64bit system. I've found a Control Surface definition/editor/tool for Sonar and Behringer BCR-2000, made by AJ. It could be great, just there's one problem - it works only with 32bit systems. I tried to contact AJ by this forum to ask for 64bit version, but I got no ansver :( But despite of it - these two Behringers are the best choice, if you look for cost-effective solution with capabilities.

if you have audio/midi interface, buying VS-700 has no sense. For half of this price you can find little used Mackie MCU Pro AND C4/XT. I've seen on ebay.uk And - I bought used in nearly mint condition Mackie MCU PRO, 3 weeks ago, for my friend for 500$

The VS-700c was going for $2000 last year. I don't know if it dropped. It is a lot, but you get one touch editing of most every function. And the jog/shuttle wheel combination ought to be available by itself for navigating the screen (at a cheap price). The whole thing is a very tactile way of controlling a DAW. If you just want faders, it is too much. It is a different paradigm. I wish I had bought one, but the checkbook said no. @

comparing with price of used Mackie MCU units it's still too much, as I said before. but - it's still great controller, without a doubt. Just when I look at ebay and prices for VS-700 system - more-less 3200$ - it's totally overrated 4 me. And - you can't expand it - and Mackie system - you can. Going back to the first post: Yamaha has very strange politics - they still sell mLan boards for keyboards, synths and mixers, but they don't suport it anymore. You spend few houndreds bucks for nothing. You can try to use Win98/XP/Vista drivers, but.... wish you luck. I try to fight with Korg mLan card for triton Rack... hopelesss..... Yamaha didn't put drivers for this card in newer version of drivers bundle and mLan Tools software.

Thanks for all the responses, I would love to have the V700 system dedicated to the DAW. Does anybody know how old the V700 is? It's a huge investment and I would hate to back a dead horse as I did with the Yamaha 01X. If I were RICH I would buy 2 of everything and say lets make music, but I'm not so I have go after the best bang for the buck. The Yamaha 01X is a good system and it will be hard to replace the features without spending a small fortune and my first born. I had another thought so let me toss this one out. Could I keep the Yamaha 01X and use it as and imput only device (Mic, Guitar, hard synth, etc...) and use the V700C as my DAW controler.? I don't know about routing through X!/a, can X1/a see 2 controlers at the same time without conflict? I've never tried that so if anyone knows please let me know. I will consider all the options presented, and once again I say thanks for all of your input Thanks, mpop Music is Life

Here's a fast and dirty compile of the surface DLL. It does come up in 64 Bit X1. http://www66.zippyshare.com/v/80663068/file.html The console app is going to be a bigger issue. It's a VB application and VB is long dead. I don't have the hardware, which may be why it doesn't start for me. Does the console start for you? -Andy

ANDY - YOU DID IT :) After putting compiled file into installation directory and after installation - EVERYTHING WORKS OK! Even this graphical "console". It doesn't matter that this control surface isn't perfect itself - but IT WORKS with basics. Hope someone would make some re-touch to make it work even beter with X1.

Hi Andy. Do tell, did you have to make any changes to the 32 bit code or did it just load up and compile correctly the first time? Thanks.

Almost. I had to change the return type of the DialogProc from a BOOL to an INTPTR, but that was about it.

Thanks Andy. I made this change, compiled it and darned if it doesn't work just like it's 32 bit brethren!
