EMU 1616M Mic Question

Ok I have done some searching and googling for awhile but haven't really found the answer I am looking for.

In regards to the 1616m, I know it has two mic inputs which are on the front. However, if I wanted to do/record 4 mics at one time (like say recording a quartet), would I need another box to connect to the 1616m for the extra inputs? I have read about the ADAT which supports up to eight channels but I am not sure whether that means that I could get say a box with enough mic inputs to connect via ADAT on the interface.

Would anyone have an idea on what external device I would need, if any to connect to the 1616m to get the extra mic inputs? Thanks for any help.

I have the same unit.  I use the rear inputs as well.  You just need a mic pre.

kson is right, you just need a mic pre (or multiple mic pres depending on how many you want to use at the same time)

I've got some mic pre recommendations on my website.

Hmm, an external mic preamp box...okay I will look into that. Since you also used the rear inputs (which would use the TRS connections) then you would have plugged two more mics in two of the rear inputs, yes?

@Beagle, will check out the preamp recommendations, thanks for the help!

EDIT: Actually Beagle, after reading the mic section on your site I found that a mixer could do the job. While I don't have a mic preamp box lying around, I do have my Yamaha 10-channel mixer which has 4 mic preamps. So if what I am thinking is right, I can connect the mics there and then run the output from the mixer to the rear inputs of the 1616m. Sounds like a winner!

yes, using a mixer will work, but if you want to keep the channels separate for mixing you'll need to use only 2 of the mic pres on the mixer, pan each of them hard right and left respectfully, then connect the main outs of the mixer left and right to 2 of the LINE inputs on the 1616M.

I have a behringer ADA8000 connected via tos link (light pipe) to my 1616. This gives me an additional 8 mic pres that show up in patchmix as 4 stereo pairs. It has worked faultlessly with the 1616 and sonar 6pe, doesnt sound bad and is cheap. A more upmarket unit would be the Focusrite Octo Pre.

Yes.  I actually didn't use the mic pres on the unit because I have another that I would rather use externally, not that the ones on the 1616m are bad.
