Sonar 8 - Control Surface Integration???

Hi Guys,
             I had a question about Sonar 8 in relation to control surface integration.

I would like to purchase a control surface for S8 but am reluctant to make the leap as I'm not sure how easy it will be to configure one with Sonar 8, or which one will have the most seamless integration with S8 while also generally being a good controller to use.

First off I'm on a tight budget so my choice of control surfaces is fairly limited. I am currently looking at 2 main possibilities which are as follows:

KORG Nano Kontrol

Novation ReMote Zero SL MKII

As far as I'm aware on more recent versions of Sonar these might be listed as control surface options.

However with Sonar 8 would I have to go through the Generic Surface setup thingy??

I'm basically looking for something to control the mixer (volume faders, pan, sends, trim and maybe eq)... and also maybe one or two other plugins.

If anyone has any experience using any of these surfaces with S8 or (earlier) any tips, advice, links to setup guides, other threads etc would be very much appreciated.

    Hi, Velouria08

    I still have Sonar 8.3 and 8.5 on my machine - I guess you mean Sonar 8 before the upgrades.  But in case it's useful info - I'm using the Cakewalk keyboard by Roland, A-800 Pro, and as expected, it works great.  But that's $400 and probably out of the budget you have in mind.

    But I also have a Korg Nano Key, not the same as the Nano Kontrol, but they both use the same Nano editor.  I've plugged the Nano Key in and it works perfectly with Sonar also.  But it's not the "Generic Surface setup thingy" that I used, but the other generic "ACT MIDI Controller" which has a more sophisticated interface in Sonar.  I was able to customize keys on the Nano to control the transport, and switch between the various views - PRV, Console, Tempo, Event - also have keys set for un-do, re-do--In other words, I could choose whatever functions I wanted and the Nano performed.

    Hi Randy,
                   Thanks for the tip. If I use "ACT Midi Controller" and map the 9 faders of Nanokontrol (for example) to the first 8 faders (keeping the 9th as a Master maybe) do you know if i can take advantage of the bankable fader functionality (that I think NanoKontrol has) to map the next 8 faders in Sonar?? Also if I change the order of track in Sonar how does this relate to the controller??

                   I'm very very hazy on this whole mapping thing to be honest. It just seems like it would be a nightmare to neatly map everything while still making it easy to remember what does what in which configuration blah blah etc.

                    All the jargon is just making my head spin!

    Actually after some more research I think i'm gonna go with the Novation ReMote Zero SL MKII, because I found this YouTube video about "Novation Automap" (the software which comes with Novation hardware for mapping)... and how to use it with Sonar. It seems very straight forward and exactly what I am looking for!Hopefully it all works out.
