I still have Sonar 8.3 and 8.5 on my machine - I guess you mean Sonar 8 before the upgrades. But in case it's useful info - I'm using the Cakewalk keyboard by Roland, A-800 Pro, and as expected, it works great. But that's $400 and probably out of the budget you have in mind.
But I also have a Korg Nano Key, not the same as the Nano Kontrol, but they both use the same Nano editor. I've plugged the Nano Key in and it works perfectly with Sonar also. But it's not the "Generic Surface setup thingy" that I used, but the other generic "ACT MIDI Controller" which has a more sophisticated interface in Sonar. I was able to customize keys on the Nano to control the transport, and switch between the various views - PRV, Console, Tempo, Event - also have keys set for un-do, re-do--In other words, I could choose whatever functions I wanted and the Nano performed.
