32 or 64 bits ?
Hi, For the moment I'm using Sonar 8.5 on Win XP, but I have many sounds and I need RAM ... I plan to have a new PC with Win7 to be able to control more RAM and load a full symphonic orchestra without problems. The thing is : If I use Win7 64 bits to manage the RAM, will my Sonar 8.5 work ? Or do I have to buy another version of Sonar ? Thanks Alex

You would need to install the 64bit version of Sonar 8.5

Your Sonar disks have both versions. So when you reinstall it, pick the 64 bit version. You might want to check first that all your plugins will work ok in 64 bit, i.e that they are updated to do so and/or will work ok with Sonar's built-in Bitbridge facility.

Make sure all your hardware is 64bit compatible

I have Windows 7 64-bit and at first I installed Sonar 64-bit, but I had a lot of problems with crashing. I think it was mostly (if not 100%) due to incompatible plugins. BitBridge did not always help. So I use 32-bit now and I have no complaints. Just something for you to keep in mind.

Thanks for your answer. My problem is the RAM, because in 32 bits you can't use more than 3 Go ... So, it's very difficult to load the full orchestra. How do you manage ?

guinness28 Thanks for your answer. My problem is the RAM, because in 32 bits you can't use more than 3 Go ... So, it's very difficult to load the full orchestra. How do you manage ? Use VE Pro to run your synths/samplers. Each instrument used in VE Pro gets it's own 32 bit address space. http://www.viennaensemblepro.com/ You can run it on the same machine your daw software resides on or on another machine connected by way of Ethernet cable. No MIDI or audio interfaces needed to shuttle the MIDI and audio data back and forth between the 2 computers.

Do you mean that even if I don't have any vienna instruments I can load EWQLSO Gold, or Symphonic choirs, or Garritan, in that Vienna ensemble pro ? Is it like replacing Kontakt player ? If the purpose is using it with 32bit PC, Windows can only manage 3 Go of RAM, how does it work ? I don't understand.

You run that inside of VE Pro. 32 bit Windows by itself only has a 32 bit address space. The VE Pro program gives each vi hosted (it can have up to 16 in a single instance of VE Pro) in it it's own address space, and those instruments can be either 32 or 64 bit and each has it's own address space. These addresses spaces are independent of the Windows address space. Exactly how this is done I don't honestly know. This is basically how those that have daw's that don't have a 64 bit version like ProTools or Digital Performer or vi's that aren't 64 bit get around the single program 32 bit address limit.

Use VE Pro to run your synths/samplers. Each instrument used in VE Pro gets it's own 32 bit address space. Ouch. 195 euros sound like a kind of expensive solution. But of course if you're a VSL user you're already living in a ritzier neighborhood than I am. I've been meaning to check this out but haven't got around to it yet: supposedly JBridge can do the same thing (well, not the ethernet link, but the memory trick). It's normally used to allow 32-bit plugins in a 64-bit host, but my understanding is that you can also use it in a 32-bit host to get separate address spaces for each JBridge instance and the plugins it hosts. This would seem to suggest that you could run 32-bit SONAR under 64-bit Windows and still have increased memory for your sample libraries. Anybody ever tried this?
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

To jackn2mpu So that means that if I use VE PRO I don't need to have another PC with WIN7 64bits, my old XP 32bits is enough ? That's it ? Just need one or two more HD with other samples and VE PRO ?

And it doesn't even have to be a Windows computer - VE Pro will work cross platform (pc or Mac). It's a great way to use an old but capable computer. And with a proper router you could even use multiple computers.
