No midi input outputs
Hello again, I am back for another question. I just upgraded to windows 7 64 yesterday and am trying to reload everything. I am having trouble. I am using my laptop as I was before. When I used windows vista I had some sort of generic windows or microsoft midi controler that was always selected when I would load up x1 producer. Now that I have done a fresh install, when I go to preferences/midi no options are available under midi input and output devices. Any ideas, thanks alot..

if the Edirol PCR-500 isn't showing up in your MIDI devices then it's not been installed correctly or there's a problem with it in windows. correct the drivers for it in windows first, then after restarting sonar it will show up in the MIDI DEVICES. if you had "MS GS Wavetable" (since you mentioned a "generic windows" selection) selected in the past then you probably were using MME driver mode (and new install defaults to WDM). but you don't want to use MME driver mode if you're using the FA-101 as your soundcard anyway.

Thanks for the feedback Beagle. I am just setting my system up now. And am upstairs away from the pcr500. I haven't checked that device yet. Under vista, I think you said it correct, it was the ms gs wavetable that was selected when I would use my laptop. It don't show up anymore. I think that is the one I am wanting but it is not an option now. I forgot about the mme section, I think last time I had ASIO selected. This time it defaulted to wdm. But with that option no midi gets selected. If I try ASIO, nothing gets selected under audio devices, and if I do mme is says 32 bit. Hmm, not sure what to select. Do you think Asio4all may help me?? Alot of times I will go upstairs away from my studio and just want to listen through my laptop, that is when I would select the ms gs wavetable. Such as today. Thanks you for your response.

MME should never be used unless your soundcard doesn't work with WDM or ASIO. it's the slowest and highest latency protocol. I would also not recommend ASIO4ALL. ASIO4ALL is just a WDM wrapper to allow you to use your soundcard's WDM drivers in the host (sonar) in ASIO mode. I don't know for certain if the edirol FA-101 has ASIO drivers for win7x64, but I would think they should. have you updated your drivers from edirol's website? if not, do that. if you have and can't find any drivers available in ASIO mode, then just use WDM mode. but I'm talking about AUDIO DRIVERS, not MIDI DEVICES at this point. I hope you're not confusing the two because they are completely separate things. personally I would not recommend you trying to set your system up just so that MS GS Wavetable is available. I'd recommend using a GM softsynth like TTS-1 instead. TTS-1 even sounds better than MS GS Waveatable and doesn't have the same bounce issues.

Thanks again Beagle, Lots of great info for me to digest. Bummer about the Assio4all. My number one thing I enjoy doing is playing guitar. If not for that I wouldn't even use sonar. I recently picked up a zoom h4n that I use in my guitar room to record, but I don't get to do any great editing and don't get all the other wonderful benefits of X1. But it is a simple record and go. I really wanted to pull out the sd card from the h4n and insert it into my computer upstairs with sonar and play around with sonar that way. Hmmm,, I will check into the gm softsynth like TTS-1 you mentioned although MS GS Wavetable was working great with x1 and vista 64. Thanks again for your comments

you should be able to put the SD card in and transfer your files into sonar and mix from there!

That would make sense, I guess I just won't be able to dink around with addictive drums or other simular programs because they use midi upstairs, does that sound correct?

no, not correct! you don't need any MIDI input or output devices to use softsynths! that's why I recommended using TTS-1 instead of using MS GS Wavetable anyway! TTS-1 is a softsynth (so is Addictive!). you can use softsynths without any MIDI device being selected AT ALL! I do it all the time when I don't turn my keyboard on!

Ok, I will start researching TTS-1, thanks a ton for your help. I have never used TTS-1 and as you can tell I am not a wiz with the computer. Thanks again.

no problem! I suggest you work thru the tutorials in the help files. there are a couple of them which specifically go over details on how to use softsynths / TTS-1. also, there are videos on youtube by cakewalk which have good info about using softsynths. just search youtube for 'cakewalk'

Thanks again for your time Beagle. I bought the groove 3 instructional video from cakewalk. I went to download it again from my account and it shows I paid for it but it is not there to download. I would think it should be in my file download section. I am not sure how to get that again. Anyway I will watch the included videos and youtube video's and learn about softsynths / TTS-1. Thanks again

the downloads are only active for a short period of time after you purchase them. you should save those off onto a DVD for safe keeping in the future. contact cake support if you need to download it again.

Hi experts! I hope I am not being rude posting another question here, but it is the discussion that gets closest to my own problem. I have searched several forums (mainly cakewalk and korg), manuals, tutorials and couldn't find an answer (probably because I am fairly new to this world of MIDI, Sonar, vst, etc. I use Sonar 8 Producer Edition (x64) with my keyboard Korg x50 connected to my PC via USB cable that came with the keyboard. Sonar recognises x50 and I can send MIDI data and play live using vst plugins. I just bought a MIDI->USB cable/interface. I installed the driver for Windows 7 64-bit as per cable manufacturer instructions. I am trying to use a piano Kurzweil SP88 to send MIDI signal into Sonar and use softsynths/vst going out as audio to my M-Audio Fast Track. I can send and receive MIDI using software Encore (just an example). I ran a test application and could send and receive MIDI as well. However when I open Sonar (with the cable and piano connected), there is no MIDI input device to be selected from the list. The list is empty. So I guess Sonar does not recognise the cable+piano although Windows (and Encore) do. Does anybody know how to make this MIDI-USB interface (connected to the piano) appear as a MIDI input device in Sonar? I have tried: - Uninstall and reinstall the cable driver - Change Driver Mode from WDM/KS to ASIO (I have ASIO4ALL installed) - Change Driver Mode back to WDM/KS - Clean Windows registry removing repeated drivers (for example driver for Korg x50 appeared 3 times) as I read in forums that there is a limit of 10 MIDI devices installed in Windows 7 My config: Dell Inspiron INSP1440 Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU 4Gb RAM 64-bit operating system Windows 7 Home Premim M-Audio Fast Track audio interface MIDI-USB cable Prelude with drivers for 64-bit (manufacture states it is Windows 7 compatible) Sonar 8 Producer Edition(x64) Tks a lot! Sorry if this is a stupid question! Sorry if too much unnecessary information! Sorry if already responded somewhere in the forum and I couldn't find it!
