Setting levels for a mixdown

When you get through doing all of your recording/midi parts etc. and you want to "mix down" what I cannot seem to figure out how to do is to set the levels for tracks to where I want them at a particular point in time.   For example if your mixing down 8 tracks of tape to 2 tracks you do this in real time whereby you can move a fader up or down at the right time to control the level of a particular track.  In MC5 how do you emulate this behavior.  In other words if at 2 minutes into a song I want the keyboard to be louder and then come down 2:45 minutes into the track how do I do this?

I watched a friend using Apple's Garage band do this by setting up a mixer profile where all the levels are set according to time, then you basically execute the output to a MP3 or other audio file.

Is there something similar for CW MC5 that you can create just prior to exporting to audio?

Thanks in advance for the support.

AUTOMATION!  that's what you're wanting!

but you can't create it "just prior to export" if you mean "on the fly"  it will take some work to create the automation.  you can do it one of two ways.  you can right click on the track and select ENVELOPES>AUDIO>VOLUME (may not be EXACT, but similar) and then create "nodes" by double clicking on the line that appears on the track, then you can click and drag the areas between nodes to change the volume at particular points.  you can also change the shape of the curve by right clicking on the line in an area and making a choice for linear, fast or slow.

the other way is to set up your tracks to record the automation and then make the changes as you play the project.  click on the "W" in the track properties to arm it for  WRITING the automation.  any of the parameters which are now outlined in red will allow you to record automation, including the volume slider.  hit play on the project, then move the slider up and down as desired during playback.  once you've finished, set the automation back to READ only by clicking on the W again.

if you made a mistake on the recording of the automation, you can always make manual adjustments by using the same editing methods above regarding envelopes because the automation recording actually just creates the envelope for you, so you can always click on the envelope after creating the automation recording and adjust it by adding nodes and changing curves just like you would for a manual envelope entry.

check the help files for possibly more info that than on automation and envelopes.  I may have left some things out.

The other way is how I do all my automation.

Click the W and it turns red. Start the playback and click the volume fader. Stop the playback. You will see the blue volume envelope. (you can also do panning envelopes the same way, they are yellow)

Now, I simply right click on the volume envelope where I want and select INSERT NODE and by zooming in, I can get very surgical, precise level changes. Once a node is inserted, you can move it and delete it as well.

I often add two nodes close together before and after the event I need to change the level on.... then I simply click and drag the center solid line up or down.

my problem with using automation is that I don't know how much to move the fader until it's too late.  I was never an analog mixing engineer, so I never had the experience at moving the faders to create the mix.

I just start with the envelopes and therefore drive my wife crazy with playing parts of a song over and over again until I get the envelopes where I want them.

Beagle ...that's kinda how I do it.

I will install the basic envelope in the tracks I want to automate. Then, I mute the other automatable tracks and work thorough the song one track at a time. The only time I will work on two or more tracks at a time is when I may have 2 or 3 instruments that are taking turns on the lead. then I will generally have them all audible at a lower level to see which one sounds best...as I work through the song I have the automation behind me done.... after I hit the end.... I go back and listen straight through to see if it works right..... musically.

More than one time I had a finished song before I even got through all the tracks. In that case, I simply leave the unused tracks muted.

Hi there, my name is Bill and I am new to the forum. Slightly of subject here. I have used cakewalk over the years, all good, I recently got Creator 5 and am having a problem with unwanted notes, or events. When I copy a section and paste, say a basic drum or backing track, I find when I want to enter a fill or run to one section, the program duplicates the notes on all the parts, not just the one I am working on. How can I turn this off. I don't seem to be able to find the problem in the help section, or maybe I don't know what it is called. Can you help. Best Wishes. Bill...

hi Bill - welcome to the forum!

you really should start a completely new thread with a new problem.  you can do that in the upper left hand corner of the forum with the  POST NEW THREAD button before you enter into a thread - on the main MC forum page).

this is a problem that I have heard about from others.  have you downloaded and installed the latest update for MC5?

Yes.... if you right click on the envelope line, a popup box opens and one of the options is INSERT NODE.

I normally insert 2 nodes really close together before the event and 2 immediately following....then I simply click on the connecting line between the 2 inner nodes and drag it down....or up.

Welcome to the forum.
When copying/pasting a clip, there may be an option box "Link to Original Clip" or something like that. That box is checked by default and anything you do to the pasted clip will also be done to the original. Unchecking that box should do the trick.
