Who knew radiation was good for you?
Who knew that ionizing radiation was actually good for you at low levels? I sure didn't until I saw these sites tonight. Looks like the radiation from Japan may actually be beneficial for us here.... http://radiationhormesis.com/research/ http://www.angelfire.com/...oadaptive/inthorm.html I'm not saying we should chew on some plutonium plugs but the low level stuff, according to the research conducted by many scientists, seems to indicate that people exposed to nuclear radiation in low levels have less cancer than the mainstream.....even the guys that work at the nuke plants have less cancers according to one of the reports at one of these sites. Maybe we should be thanking Japan? Oh yeah, you won't hear this in the fear mongering media..... Anne Coulter is the only one so far talking about this and she's catching a load of crap over those comments. Read the reports and see what you think. Her comments

I heard part of her talking about this. It makes sense. We REQUIRE radiation just to live but, as usual, too much is bad (as well as certain types).

Sunshine is radiation.... when it gets on us, it causes the manufacture of Vitamin D, which is essential for life. Stand or lay in the sun too long and you get a bad sunburn which is not good and prolonged excessive sun exposure is harmful and raises cancer risks for melanoma. The theory being put forth.... ignore the commentary by Anne, as she is a lightning rod and I agree that she incites people with her commentary needlessly at times, is that the low level ionization radiation is actually beneficial in the same way the suns rays are beneficial in low level exposure. I'm not suggesting that we all go to the plutonium reactor and soak up that radiation, obviously that is high level and is extremely dangerous. My comment: "Maybe we should be thanking Japan" ..... uhhhh tongue in cheek folks? I don't want anyone blowing a cloud of radioactive dust over my home town...or your hometown either. But I also think that this situation is a bit over hyped on the "fear the cloud" side of the fence. the hysteria feeds on itself and sells TV time and magazines. I know people on FB that are downright petrified of this thing.... that is not the way to be. You should see what some of them have said to me in their pm's to me.... telling me to get my head out of the sand is the kindest of the comments. I'm saying there is research on the other side of this event that isn't being talked about. And always, always, question the news source. What is their agenda? I happen to think that the 3 tragedies in Japan (earthquake, tsunami, radiation) are not the real problem we will soon be facing from this triple threat incident.

I'm still watching the news of repair and rescue workers volunteering to go in and give it a try to fix it even though it seems certain they will be impacted with radiation sickness for having done so. Ms. Coulter and the hate mongering isn't on my radar.

Guitarhacker And always, always, question the news source. What is their agenda? In the case of Fox news it's apparently to scare the country into believing Obama is an evil Muslim and his plan is to cause the entire world economy to collapse. Then they run "buy gold now" commercials.

I had my share of radiation back in 03-04'. My hair fell out, i went down to 150lbs and I lost my appetite. I set off alarms and glowed in the dark.

It's not just Fox News these days. Consider that NBC and CNBC are both owned by GE, the company that designed the stricken reactor (whose design has been criticized as being a contributing factor in the disaster). As a result of bad press, China has canceled several nuclear powerplant projects, Germany has accelerated its no-nuke longterm plan, and proposed projects are in jeopardy in the U.S. This has the nuclear industry in a panic. You can bet their spin doctors are in full press mode, working quietly behind the scenes to salvage their business. Ask yourself how many politicians they have in their pockets, and how much news media they control. Mike asked "why am I getting all my news from the BBC?". This may be part of the answer.

Y'know - just to make a point: Have we all forgotten that for 60 years or so, we've been testing various forms of nuclear weaponry in New Mexico? Jest a tad closer than Japan - don't think I'm gonna worry about the cloud anytime soon.... No conclusions offered, jest sayin'......

Just to add to Ric's point above, I wonder just how many people realize the vast number of nukes that only the U.S. has exploded? When asked, most people reply with very low numbers (some even in the single digits). The fact is: The U.S. has exploded over 1,000(!) nuclear weapons either above ground, below ground, underwater or even in the atmosphere (1,054 to be exact). That's a LOT of (bad) radiation released, yet we're still here. Note that this doesn't take into account all of the blasts performed by other countries (USSR, UK, France, China, India, Pakistan and North Korea - that we know of - another 1,029 detonations).

every single one of the news outlets has an agenda, or a slant, or a bias to one side of the fence or the other. Business has their agenda and government has theirs. The media is generally on one side or the other, and at times, both. GE wants to sell and build more reactors, green peace and other environmental groups want to see none, and the government wants to do what whoever has the most money wants done. People in every country and area want cheap electricity and are willing to believe that the government and business are doing things safely and correctly. Ric & Craig pointed out above that many nuke tests were conducted. They even brought school kids outside to watch the blasts when they knew one was going off. With all that radioactivity that was blown into the atmosphere and the water and the ground, America should be glowing, but it's not. we have a resilient planet that will clean itself over time. Radiation decays to nothing, chemicals break down, and the danger subsides with time. Look at the Gulf of Mexico and the oil spill. Japan will recover and life will go on.... hopefully lessons will be learned and the disaster will not be repeated.

This is marginally on-topic. I came across this fascinating blog, photos taken by someone named Elana on a motorcycle trip through the Chernobyl area. Yes, you can go there with some sort of government-issued pass. If you have ever played the creepy computer game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. you'll recognize the scenery. Well, minus the flesh-eating zombies.

Radiation decays to nothing, chemicals break down, and the danger subsides with time. Look at the Gulf of Mexico and the oil spill. Japan will recover and life will go on.... hopefully lessons will be learned and the disaster will not be repeated. Well - I don't want to be misconstrued, here. Just because I'm not concerned about local effects from a reactor leak in Japan doesn't mean that I'm blind to the threat that radioactive particulates released into the environment can pose. They're real - and significant. I note todays news about food in the area around Fukushimi (?) being contaminated (duh - was anything else expected?) Certainly the planet will cleanse itself - but if I might cite Mr.Carlin, that cleansing may include the planet cleansing itself of us. Equally certainly, radiation decays to nothing - but the nastiest of it may take some thousands of years to do so. One incident of the worst magnitude could render large portions of real estate uninhabitable for a millenia or so. Personally, I'm pro nuclear power - BUT I'm anti private, for-profit nuclear power. It's too much of a loaded gun to put into the hands of people looking after their bottom line. I personally believe that nuke plants should be handled by the government, and in this country specifically by the Dept. of The Navy. Those guys know a thing or two about building reactors you can live next to. Take profit out of the equation - accept nothing less than quadruple redundancy, regardless of cost - and let the guys with the best operational record on the planet run'em. Then go about your life - nothing left to be done........ But again - I'm not running out and buying potassium iodine pills because of a steam cloud in Japan. Oh, and Craig - I had no idea the stats were that high.... but I've found the extra eye, and fingers, to be quite useful.....

You might try pulling that out and laying it on the desk at your next job interview... just to see what the reaction is. Might be fun.
