I've not used BFD, but if it's like Addictive Drums and other drum VSTs I've used, that is the only way you can use it in project. You drag the beats to a MIDI track to create the drums for a song.

Ok. I took a look at BFD2-site. It says: You can even lay out a full song's drum track entirely within BFD2!  The bolding is by me, and that makes me think you can choose whether to do the editing in BFD or in Piano Roll (but that's a 5 second peek, I've not used BFD ever).

In BFD 2, go to the Grooves Page tab, that's the one with the music notes. On the right side you see all the grooves you have loaded. Select one with the left mouse button, hold it down and drag to the midi track in Sonar. If that doesn't work, then hold down the Ctrl when you select the groove you want. I find this the easiest way to set up a drum track. You can then turn the measure or two that you brought into Sonar and turn it into a loop. Just make sure you make it the correct number of measures.

Just to elaborate on the above, if/when I find a set of grooves that I like in BFD, I copy/drag them ALL into Sonar, but on a blank MIDI track. Then I experiment by drag/copying them into the BFD Midi track and see which ones fit with particular sections of the song.

It makes sense to have the 2 Midi tracks adjacent to each other in Track View

Then it's just a case of manually editing out any hits I don't like, don't want or don't fit, and augmenting them with hits I DO like and DO fit.

This method has speeded up my drum production techniques enormously.
