As soon as I open a new project 1 midi, one audio, I'm getting a signal on the midi track. X1 Producer, Focusrite usb 6 audio interface and a A-Pro 500 midi controller. I can't find a reason. Help!

When you say you're getting a signal on the MIDI track what do you mean exactly? Is there data being received and you're hearing a sound? Or do you mean that the meters are showing input? It could be you have the MIDI track input set to "all" or "omni" (or whatever it's called - I'm not at my DAW) and what you are seeing is controller data.

No sound. The midi input is regstering at a low level. When I hit a key the level goes up. I tried inserting a soft synth. ( True Pianos) When I did I get audio from another source not True Pianos. It's sounds like there is another synth open somewhere but I just opened a Normal project. Which is another question. I do not have the option in my drop drown to open a "Blank" project.

If you go to Preferences->MIDI->devices what do you have checked there? Especially in the input box? What is selected in the input of the MIDI track that is showing activity? The default project that opens is your "normal" project template. You can set Sonar up as you want it to open and the "save as" type template and then overwrite your "normal" template or save it as a different template that will then be available when you select File->New. Then whenever you open a new project from that template it will be as you set it up. AFAIK there is no option to open a blank project other than setting a template as described above. Having said that you may get some strange results from having no tracks at all in a project.

Here's what happens. Open normal project. An audio track and midi track are created. The midi channel is already showing a low level reading on the output. As soon as I hit a key, it spikes up. The input is set to All inputs omni. When I set up a soft synth it doesn't play the soft synth it plays a tone from another source. I have used synths before with no problem so I'm pretty sure my settings are correct. I haven't changed anything.

First thing I'd change is the "all inputs omni" and change it to your A pro 500s keyboard input and channel according to what channel your A-Pro 500 is outputting on. I don't have the A-Pro 500 but I do have a PCR-800 so I guess they are pretty similar. The controller surface outputs on a different port to the keyboard side of it by default. It just seems strange you are getting a "low level reading" but did you mean input? or output?. The tone from a different source will depend on what your output is set to, and what channel it is on, plus whether input echo is enabled or not. It is on by default on the active channel IIRC. Assuming you have a MIDI track and an Audio track, a soft synth loaded in the synth rack try this. - On the MIDI track set the input to your A-Pro 500 MIDI channel 1, make sure it is the keyboard port not the control surface port.
- Make sure your A-Pro 500 is outputting on Channel 1
- On the MIDI track set the output to your soft synth with a selected Bank & Patch if necessary and outputting on a channel that your soft synth responds too.
- On the Audio channel make sure the input is set to you soft synths output.
- Also on the Audio channel make sure that the output is set either directly to your audio interface or indirectly via a buss.
You should then be able to play the soft synth. Try that and see what happens. Something that springs to mind for the problem you are seeing is a dodgy USB cable. Have you tried swapping it?

Thanks for the advice. It seems fixed now but I'm not sure how or why it happened. When I was opening a new project the midi channel input was the one that was getting a signal from somewhere. Now the confusing part. I opened up a project that I already had recorded synths with no problems. I'm getting in the habit of using the Apro for Play\stop functions. When I hit play I got an error message. I don't remember exactly what it was, but it had to do with "can't display" and or "already in use." So I checked the audio interface midi settings and found the input at none. I clicked on the Apro 2 for the input and everything was fine. Went back to the project I was working with all the problems and everything worked fine. I'm not sure exactly what I did or how it effected the other project.

Thanks for the advice FBB. I'm not new to recording but I am new to Sonar. It hard to tell if it's something I'm doing or it's something that will be fixed with the X1B patch. Now if they had an X1 noob patch, I would be set.
