I presume you are using the Cakewalk browser in X1 or 8. Do you have the browser set to preview through a soft synth? It may need to know where to send the midi, and if it doesn't you won't hear anything.

Choose Insert > Soft Synth to insert a software synth into your project.

SONAR should automatically set that up to preview MIDI files from the Browser, but if not, click the down-arrow next to the Media tab in the Browser. Then choose Synth Preview Output from the menu to choose the soft synth you want to use.

Yes, since Project5 is dead now, Cakewalk has included the pattern files from that product with SONAR so users can still get some use from them.

    Hi Guys
Yes I should have thought about this a bit more,
"put it through a soft synth" why didn't I think of that.

    Thanks for the replies

It's a problem with your system. You need one of the local DAW builders to make a special DAW for you.
Never connect to the net and disable all your network and virus stuff too.
Oh and don't forget you need a TI firewire card.
And someone in a post yesterday suggested using a VIA USB chip set was ultra important too. So there!
