Building New DAW

Hello all. I am in the process of building a new DAW PC. While I don't have all the specs yet here's what I am aiming for.....

* Sandy Bridge i7 2600k processor
* ASUS P67 series mobo
* 16gb's of RAM (1600).. but I actually want more.. just can't find an 8GB chip.
* SATA drives as needed for OS/APPs, SAMPLES, and DATA/PROJECTS

I am stuck on power supply and perhaps case. I dont know how "big" a power supply I need. The video card will probably be a dual head ATI (5xxx series?).. so I dont know if I need 900 watts or more. I am drawn to a rackmount case and ANTEC makes a nice one.. with a 650 watts supply. Would that be enough? If not, would an old ANTEC SONATA case (original series) I have lying around with a bigger power supply work with the new DAW? Would USB3 use the same "USB ports" on the case?

Also, for memory.. are 8GB chip available? The mobo's will handle 32GB's.. would be nice to fill it up now.. but if they are in short supply or crazy expensive 16 will be fine. Do i need to get FOUR chips? Or can I put in just two now.. and two later? Do the pairs have to match in size?Just wondering..

Of course this is to run X1!!

Thanks guys!

    One thing about the DAW you want to put together....

    Intel i7 processors does not support 1600 mhz memories....you can use 1066 or 1333 mhz memory module....more than that will give you trouble....

    Thanks guys for the tips.

    @gcruz: even the new 1155 socket (i.e. Sandy Bridge). I'm seeing lots of those pc's built and most if not all come with 1600 memory (dual channel).

    Memory can always run slower than its rated speed.
    I run my 1066MHz RAM at 800MHz because it is less stressful for my motherboard and the maths is easier!

    So 700 watts should be enough?

    How about my old Antec Sonata case or Antec P180 case? Will I be able to use USB3 on the same ports of the case? Or is USB3 a diffrent connector?

    Look here and fill out the info. I did and I got a power supply that was more than I needed. So i can upgrade a bit,a nd have all usb2 and eSATA ports full if I need them going.

    Antec Power Supply calculator:
    http://www.antec.outervision.com/index.jsp

    This is the best one I'v found. There was one other one, but it was the exact same, someone just ripped it off. There are lots of psu calculators, this gives a lot of info though.

    Laptop specs: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2Ghz, 3Gb RAM, Vista Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 2, ATI 3100. 3eSATA to work off of, a bunch of external drives.

    [<font]700 watts should be fine unless you are doing something really "out there."

    One thing not yet mentioned: you do not need a high-powered graphics card for a DAW.  Consider going with a passively cooled, fanless card as one possible option.

    On my new PC, I installed OCZ DDR3 Platinum 7-7-7-20 1333MHz RAM and the BIOS automatically set the frequency to 1066MHz.  I was intending to adjust it later, but so far the PC seems sufficiently powerful for my needs, so I have not bothered.

    If you do photo or video editing, watch hd video, do graphic design, gaming ,etc: A person can get a nice graphic card for $100 or less. Mine was about $65 with a  rebate.

    More video elements are being added to dj'ing and producing. I want to get ahead of this bit. But these elements are already common.

    Not trying to discredit noldar12. I am learning some photo and video editing, watch video footages, etc but do not game. If you wanted to pick something else up, try and think a few years ahead.
