Ctrl+S - saving during playback - glitch

I've been fighting this for a while, and I'm not sure what the fix is.  I would assume it's video card/driver related....but perhaps not.

During playback, if I Ctrl+S (save), I get a fairly annoying glitch in playback.  On my older systems, with another video card, this has been a non-issue.

Maybe someone has an idea?

Specs:
Happens in X1 and other versions of Sonar - even at high buffer settings
OS - Happens in both Win7-64 Pro and XP-32
CPU - Core i7-950
MB - Gigabyte - GA-X58-UD3R (rev 2)
Video - Zotac GeForce GTX 460
Memory - Corsair XMS 6GB DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) Triple Channel Memory
PS:  Cooler Master RS-800-80GA-D3 Silent Pro Gold 800W ATX

Thanks for any insight you might have!

No....doesn't freeze at all.  Just an audible digital glitch for a fraction of a second when I save during playback.

Try using the "diskette" icon in the top tool bar or...FILE>SAVE.

I can run some process heavy FX like melodyne and the synths and O4..... the timeline will stop but the audio never stutters.

My mantra too...but it's several years worth of habit to ctrl+s.

I'll try it, but it's gonna suck if that's the only way.  SO MUCH quicker/easier to ctrl+s for me.  I can do it without looking - or even thinking about it at this point.

Well Iwas trying to post a picture to compare glitches but Im not sure how to insert it or what file type it needs to be.  The glitch goes through every track at the same point in the tracks intermittently throughout recording. Trying to track down what caused it also. (power glitches, I dont think its save for me ). Was just wanting to compare

I don't know if the glitch carries over to a recording or not.....haven't tried it yet.  I will try recording a track this afternoon to see if the results are the same.

I'm specifically talking about the audible glitch that happens if I "ctrl+s" during playback.

Ahh , think I see. While the transport is in motion/playing, you save?

Mines a bad audible also but I can see where it actually is in the sound waves.  The photo is what occured during recording. Wasnt dedetectable during but after finished, there it was. Many points throughout take. First time experiencing this.  Im leaning toward sdmoething interupting X1 software wise but not X1.

Im watching what you come up with to compare.

    Thanks

Hook... you don't normally save in the middle of a live recording... your audible glitch comes from the computer having to stop what it's doing to handle the save function. What is your CPU number before the save? I'm guessing it's high.

Mike... are you recording on ALL the tracks when that happens or just on one and it gets into the others too?  I could tell you are zoomed in... it looks like a click or a pop sound as small as it is.

Do you hear the sound when it happens?  I'm thinking it could be something in the interface. A bad cord/cable or an electrical spike..... kinda hard to say. Looks like you're running W7 @64 bits... is everything in the chain totally compatible? Does it happen often or intermittently?

BTW: posting a pic.... look at the tool bar in the quick reply window.... to the left of the smiley face is a box with a mountain and the sun in the icon...... click that and paste the photobucket link into the field, and the pic appears in the post.

Actually....I DO quite nomally save during a live recording.  Have been for years without problems.

My CPU usage is actually quite low...say around 20% or so.

All that aside, I'm not even talking about during recording yet.  I'm only discussing the glitch that comes from saving during playback.

    Thanks for the info Herb,
For me I was thinking its more of a power glitch.  I didnt hear during recording but the lights would slightly dim as the PA system was being worked where we were at.  I did record all tracks at the same time. The glitches appears 3-5 times in a 3-4 minute session (Intermittently) All equipment for recording was run through  a power conditioner.  Hasnt happened the last few lengthy recording but this time it did. Was just curious if similar symptom with Skulls.  I know his was during Save while playing. I dont mess with anything once the transport is in motion outside of monitoring things.

    Thanks again Herb.  ;)

    Strange.

I just got off the phone with tech support and they tell me that this glitch is normal, and that most people have it if they try to save during playback.

I've been lucky for years I guess....able to ctrl+s during playback AND tracking any time I wish without any glitch.

hook... do you click the save/control s while the record is actually being recorded... while "rolling tape"?

I've never tried to save while "rolling tape"...I always click save after I stop the record process......

Yeah man...I've been doing it like that for years now.  As I make changes to the mix on the fly - even while recording - I smack ctrl+s after each change.  All day long....for years.

The ONLY time it has been a problem, it has ALWAYS been video card/driver related.  Find the right video driver and the problem disappears.

I'm kicking myself because I upgraded video cards for this new system since I'm running Win7-64 and having trouble finding a driver for my old video card.

    Hmmm...what to do.....

    Right....  :o)

But I'm quite often recording other folks, so I have the time to play with the mix during a performance.  And when I make a nice tweak, I like to save it before Sonar goes belly up - which is very rare...but it does happen once in a while unexpectedly.

Of course, there are certain things that Sonar won't allow you to tweak or add during the recording process, but "save" has never been one of them, thankfully.

This is such a process - to upgrade to a new OS, a new machine, AND a new buggy version of the DAW all at the same time.

I realy am quite tempted to go back to XP and try X1 as the 32 bit version.  I bought another hard drive specifically to load Win7-64 and X1.  This way I can get in the machine, swap cables, and be back up and running in XP with Sonar 5 - which has been my choice of Sonar for years now.  With the old Sonar, audio drivers, and video drivers from about 1995 or so this machine runs SO fast and stable.

But I do like the ProChannel.  It's exactly what I needed in Sonar for years now.  X1b SEEMS to have that part of the software acting correctly now...more time is needed to see how stable it is.

I just got off the phone with tech support and they tell me that this glitch is normal,

It may be normal in Sonar, but that's a horrible attitude for them to take.

Sonar is just really glitchy. I still get short buzzes or glitches when adjusting a fade a lot of the time. Even turning on looping will cause a glitch.   And before you blame my hardware, I'm running a Jim Roseberry DAW.  Sonar simply isn't as 'smooth' running as other DAWs.

FYI.  Today I confirmed that when I'm recording and use the ctrl+s to save, there is an audible glitch, but there is no recording of the glitch.  No spike...no pop, etc. on playback.  So at least I won't be worrying about that.
