OLDER projects in X1B comments

I've now checked a few projects I did within the last 2 weeks in 8.5.3.   Big projects, lots of plugins.

Here's what happens in each case:

X1B doesn't get some things right.   Example:  I had 2 instances of Fab Filter Twin2 in 2 projects.  Playing back I noticed something wrong (after loading the projects in X1B).   Sonar confused the two.  It got the 2nd instance of Fab Filter wrong (it thought it was the first instance).

I see this pattern and saw it previously when I toyed with X1 initially.    So the playback sounded VERY different and took quite a bit of investigating to figure it out at first.

PITA but life will go on.

X1B takes a lot longer to find things because of all the tabbing in the Inspector.   And these wacky shortcut names we're stuck with makes it even harder.    It's like a dumbing down thing.

PITA but life will go on.

But the point is - there does seem to be some issues trying to migrate older projects and I think everyone should at least be aware of it.

I'm seeing this as a "roll forward" situation.  Meaning, anything done previously (in 8.5.3 for example) should probably stay there and be worked on there if need be again.

Anything done in X1B is "from now and forward" -- meaning, a project done in X1B should be thought of as just that.  Don't go backward.    If you're not sure X1B is working for you (do a lot of testing!), then don't use it for serious stuff until you're sure it's working as you expect.

I accept that things march on.   So I'm ok with this after I do all my testing and am happy with X1B.   But I do feel there are problems with backward compatibility, so be aware of that.

    Thanks for posting,

I'd be content to accept limited backwards compatibility if the future of Sonar (X-series?) will be the best DAW ever! (or something like that)

Well, that's why I said "PITA but life goes on."   I, too, can accept some minor annoyances with backward compability as well.

I never delete older versions of Sonar, so it's not a problem.

I am more curious to see how X1B handles real-life/now situations - hopefully as well as 8.5.3 if not better.

As for the 'best DAW ever" stuff -- I'm over that LOL.   My loyalty is to my work and my well being (and that of other good humans).   CW lost some of my trust in this X1 affair.   They will have to earn it back.

Besides, the best DAW is the one that works when you're using it.  I love LIVE for example.  I like Studio One a lot.  I LOVE 8.5.3.  I hope to at least like if not love X1B.

Just tried 2 other pre-X1 projects and they also had issues.

No need to detail as it is obviously a pattern.

    Here's more ...

I opened the very last project I did in 8.5.3 and unfroze Maschine plugin.

All the tracks for it showed up with "Note" as opposed to "7bit".

I've seen this before, but it just continues to reinforce my feeling that there are issues with backward compatibility.

Hasn't this been par for the course on every release?  I try to never run a project over two versions.

It actually hasn't been "par for the course" for me at all times.  There were a number of versions that allowed me to have good backward compatibility.

8.5.3 still does a decent job of opening older projects.

One thing that IS par for the course is that software can be annoying lol

I've tried about three separate files on mine and found somewhat the same issues...except one froze on me..then crashed...

I'm also seeing that Sonar isn't "closing" properly on a number of the pre-X1 projects I've tried.

I'll have to see if that pattern continues on new projects.

I am dissapointed to hear this :(

I am haveing internet Issues so I wont be downloadind X1B untill the morning but with that said I was hopeing projects would work form 8.5.3 to X1 with out a problem

I actualy installed X1 for the first time just a couple of days ago and loaded a few of my past sessions and none of my sends to my busses were there allso this was the same for the demo projects everything was set to NONE.

I was really disapointed by this so I emailed Tec support and have been advised to do a fresh clean install of X1 then A then B

I will do this tomorrow and I hope they work ok .

I had actualy not finished a few projects hopeing to use them in X1 as a learning tools for it as such

I am hopeing they work ok

Has any one else come across this Issue by chance before or am I just unlucky ?

X1B takes a lot longer to find things because of all the tabbing in the Inspector.
? Are you using a dual screen setup Billy? I have the Track Inspector on the second monitor. This frees up space in the track view and lets me have both inspectors open.

I have X1 set up more or less as if it were 8.  CV on the other screen and the multidock at the bottom of the TV. Not unlike the tabbed view in the old Sonar. The Browser is there if I need it and of couse the synth rack is there too. Most of my open FX plugins are also on the second monitor.

I am using the Sonar Plus addition by Ben plus the Darkside mod by Panup in X1 b. So far I have not run into a problem. I have loaded a quite a few old projects and again not run into any problems.

Two things I can confirm have been fixed the disappearing CB with the event inspector loaded and the MIDI meters not working after a solo. Both have been fixed.

John, it really wouldn't matter about having the Inspector on a 2nd monitor because one still has to tab to get to items in the Inspector.   Where it's located would not circumvent that.

I, of course, will spend time doing the kinds of setups that will work best for me, but there are limitations regardless.

Even screensets.  As useful as they can be -- just load in a pre-X1 project and all the screensets you've setup have no bearing.   It's not like one is starting a fresh project with a project template pre-setup as the user likes.

Sonar doesn't have nor sees "screensets" in older projects so it loads a default setup, which more often than not, is not very useful other than to get going.
