distortion plugin? do you mean like to add distortion to guitar? which version of MC do you have? MC5 has amplitube which has amp emulators and has several distortion settings.

And they're snazzy. I love the fact that it allows you to save your settings. I created a sound that was very close to my actual amp sound and have saved it. I'm not so sure I will be using any other amp sounds.

horus2 Yep, adding distortion to guitar. I have MC3. I have found this to be very good, and the price is right.

I think an amp sim available with the MCs of that era was called Amp Sim Lite.

Where do you place these once you have downloaded them? That Shred one, or whatever it is, looks cool. I like the Frankenamp option.

When they download, or install after unzipping, note the location of the file (write it down). Open MC, go to Tools at the top, then Plug-in Manager. Add the file location to the list of places for the VST scanner to scan, then run the scanner. If all goes well, the VST will be available in the list of effects when right-clicking in an audio track's effects (FX) bin.

Quite often, during the installation process the new application will ask where you want to install it. It does have a default folder it wants to set up. You can do that and then simply add it to the plug in mgr list. I installed a few 3rd party plugs recently that placed their DLL's right in the VST folder. I simply did a scan and everything worked. (I have the autoscan on start disabled so MC starts quicker)

I downloaded the freeamp3 into it's own cakewalk program files folder and then used VST wizard to scan for that file and configure it. I've looked at acmebargig.com as well but haven't delved too much into them yet.

I put that Shred download on my computer last night. Used it one. I will be removing it from my computer today. I'm not overly fond of it. It might be my inexperience with the MC5 program, but that program seems to override everything else. In the guitar spot I had both that one and the Amplitube. I tried silencing the Shred program, but it was still messing with Amplitube. The only way to do away with it and use the Amplitube was to remove it completely from the track. Turning it on and off did nothing.

Did you have them both in the same track? Were you using an Instrument track? Or regular audio tracks with the effects inserted in the FX bin? If you were just trying it out, use a regular track and insert Shred in the FX bin. No amplitube.

I had it in the guitar track, where the Amplitude is. So they will both run even if you have one off? I noticed that once I turned off the Shred I could hear the Amplitude track, but it was very faint. Once I removed the Shred, the Amp showed up in full force. I did notice that there seems to be a little more latency with the Shred. Amplitude is almost perfect, whereas the Shred run a late. Plus, all of the presets in Shred are loaded with reverb. So loaded that you can't come to a dead stop without the reverb echoing on and on. I might keep it, but I am thinking I might not need it. I really like what is available on the Amplitube freebie, and I am not much of an experimenter. That being said, I am finding my "experimentation" side with this program. It's so dang easy creating soundtrack style recordings on my couch, that I will probably need a plethora of sounds.
