Ballad Of Mona Lisa - One Man Band - Video/Song

Hi There, (Link at the bottom of the post).

I've made a new video, it's a cover of 'Ballad of Mona Lisa' the new single by Panic! At The Disco. It comes out today in the UK but I'm unaware of when it comes out/came out in the USA.

Anyway, as usual, all instruments were played and recorded by me, vocals were sung by me and the video was filmed and edited by me. I'm pretty pleased with the result and the mix.

Hope you enjoy watching this!!

This was a hard song to cover and hopefully I've done it justice.

Chris.

You made a cover of a song that's yet to come out?  Wow!  :)

And Wow--I'm impressed.  For one thing, I can't imagine what it takes to video all that.  And besides that, you played and sang and mixed it all.  Great job!

Thanks a lot Janet. I figured that in the 'youtube covers' niche you have to be on top of the game in terms of chat releases and try to create videos at the same time as the originals to try to get more exposure.

    Glad you enjoyed the video.

This is unbelievably awesome Chris!!!  I mean no disrespect to Panic! At the Disco, but I prefer your rendition.

Loving the recording but too bassy for my ears - needs to be much tighter around the mids. either way, excellent work.

    Cheers for that guys.

Mike: Is the problem around 250-600ish? I do have a bit of a known dip in my room at that point but it's rather difficult to rectify that as I'd be mixing that area blind really. Its something I usually try to solve in mastering but with the prominent floor tom washing over that area it did create a bit of a problem. I gave the snare drum a bit too much body in that area too but unfortunatly I have to record and mix everything in my bedroom which just leaves the sound wanting a little in certain areas.

Again thanks to everyone for the compliments, especially the one relating to my voice, thats the area I'm least confident about.

    Cheers,

    Chris.

Outstanding.   Your videos are pretty cool, but your sound is out of the park good.

    Wow! Just.... f-ing WOW!

Excellent work. Do you actually shoot vid while recording, or do the song and then come back on play along with it? Also, what video software do you use? I'm looking to get something for my own work. I actually just bought a Canon 550D, it's awesome to see what kind of work it's actually capable of.

Well, I only have one camera and the drums were done in one take ;)

In other words, I do the video seperate. Simply because I like to be chilled out while recording and I don't like to have to think about 'performing' while recording.

I use Avid Media Composer for video, but I create and edit video every day for work so I need a professional editing package. It does mean i can edit 9 sync'd camera angles in a matter of minutes.

    Hope that helps.

    Chris.

Excellent job on this Chris.  Cool vid and a good solid track.  And, IMO, I don't think you have any reason to lack confidence in your vocal ability.  You shot out the lights on this one.

So Chris, you record it first, then video yourself playing along to the recording?

Cool.  What a great idea.  I've been wanting to video another piano performance, but can't ever get it right in one go.  :(  But I'd think that would certainly help to not be videoing it while recording.

    Well that's the point.
I am not going for a 'live' video look. I'm going for the 'band in the studio' look which means I'm using the usual overdubbing studio techniques and then miming to the finished track ala music video. Thus allowing me to do multiple angles and get everything looking good so if i DO make a mistake in the video I always have another angle to go to and if its really bad I can just do it again. Plus it also means if i get a great recording but a bad angle or don't quite focus right etc I've not wasted a great audio take.

That's great.  Also, easy enough for you, since you do this for a living.  :)  But you've given me some good ideas.  I'd like to play it on my keyboard so I can edit any flubs in Sonar, but my studio's WAY too small to get a good video in.  Anyway, you've given me some ideas.  Thanks.  (and I really do hope to get them down right anyway...  it just may take me awhile.)  :)

You'd be supprised what a wide angle and some black material/plain walls can do.

Just excellent, Chris. All of it. Not sure why you're concerned about your voice. Sounds great to me. Impressive project - especially from just one person. Just curious, what kind of camera do you use?
