A drumset and some microphones is the best drum sampler I've found.  Sorry I can't help.

Get thee to KVR and make liberal use of their search! But man do I miss the DR-008.

pinguino: unfortunately you cant make synth drum sounds with a regular ol drum kit. and i have a drum kit and plenty of mics in the studio so that's not the problem. I'm even going to be putting midi triggers in said drum kit...

also i don't want the samples. i have loads of those. I want a platform in which to trigger my samples from.

    ok ill check out kvr

blix, kvr is a forum / online database of plugins. the problem is you're going ot be digging thru at least 50 free drum samplers...

i was hoping somebody here had a free favorite they could recommend... oh well.

or maybe if cakewalk made beatscape more one hit sample friendly.. that would be nice!

Don't know of anything current, only older...

AO digital has been out of business, but they made a few easy to use drum vsti's you can search for and maybe find.
AO Digital Audio DKL, was the free version
AO Digital Audio DK1, was the paid version

    Try THIS.

Of the first bunch, I know people who used Loopazoid and liked it.

Fxpansion DR-008 is still my favorite-

I wish they would bring it back and update it!

It aint for though, but it was with Sonar XXL, but only the Dxi version if I remember, which I do not recommend.

Yah, and I bought GURU and hardly ever use it. I watched the Geist vid and it just doesn't click with me at all.

If I was ONLY using that than maybe, since it's practically a DAW all by itself now. But the rapid and elegant use they had with the DR-008 is gone for me, replaced with gobs of features I don't need. *sigh*

wicked, do you use Maschine?  What about Motu's BPM?  I was considering Geist because its a lot cheaper than Maschine but then read one of your post about it being an 8 track sequencer, a lite DAW in general and X1 has all of that and more.  I did read somewhere that BPM has the best sounds out of the three but which beat making program would you recommend?

I know you said free. However, I don't think you will find that good of a drum sampler for free (I've checked). I cannot tell you how nice it is to have Battery 3. I never cared for it until they finally added quick MIDI learn to most important knobs on the last update. I have not found a better interface for a drum sampler so far, and it is drastically faster and more intuitive than anything else I have tried, including every freebie I could get my hands on. You can drag and drop samples and rearrange/add/delete pads with the mouse which makes kit building of various sizes and types lightning fast. Setting up controllers, effects and automation are done in a couple simple clicks. Well worth the investment if you can save up the cash. It can be had for 179 USD , or 99 academic pricing. There are good synths out there for free, but not a lot of good drum samplers.

I guess I'm not supposed to mention Sonar's Drop Zone--?  It does what I want - loading samples easily and instantly playing them on my keyboard.

Oh yea, there is beatscape from S8/8.5P.

Dropzone only loads one sample at a time, no? As in no pads?

Another really good freebie is called Tatapoum 4.0. Silly name, effective interface.

Hi, Cornieleous--"No pads"---?  I thought we were talking about drum samples.  You mean no layers?  I guess that's right, one sample per slot, like regular drum machines, EZ drummer et al.  Works for me!  If I want layering, I just use multiple sound sources on the same MIDI channel being triggered by the same notes.

Pads as in trigger pads, not layers. Very useful for drums. For example, I load one instance of Battery, and I get up to 128 pads I can click on or assign to hardware controller trigger pads. Each of those trigger pads can load up to 128 stacked samples.

With something like dropzone I thought I recall only one sound per instance. Maybe I remember wrong.

No you're right about Drop Zone.

A looooong time ago there was one, I think it was called Hammerhead.

If you don't need to do velocity layers, I'd give Session Drummer another shot, it's actually quite easy...until you need to edit the files by hand for layers and chokes and such (I mean srsly, no editor even a layer element in the UI?)

i use an old very affordable and very still great drum machine called the alesis sr-16.sonar has drum maps installed in its map so all you do is plug in and its pads are synched up to sd3.i write all my beats on the pads and arrange all my parts in the alesis.i then synch it to the timeline and press play...one buttonn..thats it..i hit one button and it plays my whole tune that i wrote all the drum parts too..and like i said its also symched to the timeline, which is critical if your looping so it all lines up.its the best possible solution i had to triggering my drums..i love it this way
