X1 diary
Hi 1st day: after instaling X1B new projects (made on X1a) opens normally. Everything seems to be ok. Old projects (made on 8.5.3) crashes just after opening with C++ runtime error info, or not opens at all, and Sonar crashes. Before X1b it was not a problem - old projects opened normally. After restarting PC nothing changed. I thouhght: something is wrong with MS C++ redistributable packages...I will check it tomorrow :-) 2nd day: I turned on my PC, started X1B and run one of old project in safe mode. Turned off all theoretically problematic VSTi (Groove Agent3 and Hypersonic 2), and project started. I saved it and reopen in normal mode. Surprise! Projects opens! No errors! How it is possible? Yesterday crash - today not? I did not change anything with C++ packages....I swear! I save a project as a new project, and reopen - with success. I opened all probleamtic old project in normal mode - succes again. Turned off my PC. 3rd day: to be continued.... My system: Mac Mini and Win XP SP3 (bootcamp) Tascam FW-1082. Sonar X1B with Dimension Pro, Rapture... 3rd party VST: PSP Total Pack, Groove Agent 3, Hypersonic 2, EzPlayer, AKAI Aria, TruePianos My project are very simple: some audio tracks, two or three VSTi in a projects. Never more than 20 tracks per project.

No problem opening any of my old 8.5.3 in X1a or X1b. Sorry I haven't seen the C++runtime error message. I hope you have continued success.

What you were probably experiencing was typical computer behavior. Everybody who wish to install Sonar X1 should do this before installing.. 1. Restart their computer to earn out all potential bugs from previous computer use. 2. Do a 'Registry' cleaning using a program like Registry Mechanic before installing. 3. Do a 'registry' cleaning after installing the program or any program regularly. If you don't do these thing you will accumulate registry errors that will create bugs over time until you have to do a full OS reload every so often. Mandatory Otherwise you and your programs will live with bugs for the rest of your life. Didn't know how important doing those things were until I happen to do them and many issues I thought were bugs had started clearing up and disappearing. A good registry cleaning is as useful to your computer as is an old change is to your car. Not doing these things over time will seriously damage either your car engine or your computer engine.

Thanks kday. Sounds wise what you're saying. I will follow your advises, but believe me, my MAC mini, and Win are solid as a rock: no crashes, no blue screens untill X1 appears. I use it only for audio recording. One thing I understood that X1 is a "special case" which needs special care. OK :-), and You must agree - it is unnormal software (X1) behaviour. I use three others PCs, and done many different audio installs, and uninstalls, driver updates....believe me....a lot of things like X1 installations. Never (never!) happened something like X1 problems. So, I can say: the reason is not in a system (OS), not in my good or bad care od registry, not in "typical computer bahaviour", but in Sonar X1. thanks

I did get one 8.5.3 file to crash. It loaded but the minute I hit play the screen went white while it actually continued to play. The counter stayed at zero the whole while. Bitbridge was/is the problem. By clicking into the project about 10 seconds in and then hitting play, it worked normally the next time. I immediately saved it in X1 and the problem never re-occurred. Possible work around. In all cases of crashing in X1b it's been Bitbridge. It is not as stable as X1a with the hotfix here. Overall I would have to say that if you are running 64 bit, either use jbridge or move away from using 32 bit plugins while in a 64 bit environment. It's just not stable.

Cakewalk Tech Support does not officially endorse any registry cleaner nor encourage our end users to try them. I've seen more than my share of customers who have had their installations impacted negatively after running these tools. I've worked on PC's for a long time and if your registry is that far corrupted or cluttered it's time for a reformat. There are much better options out on the market now, like Acronis True Image. You can roll back to a near factory state, saving hours.

Thanks Seth So what I have to do? kday said: "do registry cleaning", and You said it is risky. My PC is in good condition. I can say that becouse there is no alarming syndroms pointing my system earlier to be "corrupted or cluttered". Do reg-cleaning or not? If "yes" there is a chance to have my Sonar stable with older projects. If "no" it will a "russian rulette' for rest of my X1 life. Any ideas? Best regards Mike

Probably nothing. You did not reboot and experienced an error. Next day after reboot no errors. So just keep using it.

I wrote "After restarting PC nothing changed". That is the problem: Once C++ runtime error appears, and once not. I'm going to continue this specific "test" today evening and we'll see :-) Best regards

Best regards Mike I would hold off on any registry cleaning at this point. Since you were able to open the projects without error after doing a 'safe mode' launch/save and disabling the plug-in's, I'm not convinced it's something to do with Windows (yet?). What I usually do after a patch (and go through with a lot of customers) is: 1. Go to Edit -> Audio/Preferences -> Configuration File -> [Reset Config to Defaults] a. If this does not appear make sure you are in the 'Advanced' mode on the bottom of the preferences dialog. 2. Double Check your synths are up to date (I know that I'll get flak from some users for this, but it really is important). 3. Go to Edit -> File/VST Settings -> [Scan VST Folders]. a. Make sure 're-scan failed' and 're-scan existing' are both checked before hitting [Scan VST Folders]. It may be simple and elementary, but you'd be surprised how many users it really helps. If you're still having problems after that please send me a private message. BTW: Nice upright! I have a 3/4 fully carved upright from Bulgaria. I just wish I had more time to play it
