So how much is an i-Llock?
We are being offered a "special" for Antares at $79......but we have to buy an i-Lock (dongle?) So #1. How much is an i-Lock #2....don't like dongles. I hope this i-lock is a software key, and not the reason we are being offered Antares "cheap" (nobody likes dongles, right?) Sorry if I sound a bit....jaded. I have seen some offers here that have annoyed me, as a dedicated, "valued", customer.

$39.00 at the major chains (Guitar Center, Sweetwater, Etc) It's a license 'holder'. You have to have it plugged in for the software to run. You only need one, however. to hold multiple licenses and can be accessed by multiple venders.

I bought mine for $35 but that was years ago. As Rageo says, it is a USB memory stick that holds the authorization of licences. iLoc has an internet site with all your info - the software co sends your authorization there to your account and you download it to the iLok. It is all pretty painless. the thing to watch out for is that there are more companies starting to use similar services. Make sure it is for the iLok, or you'll have to buy another bit of hardware and find a USB port to plug it into. @

Make sure you get the newest version which holds a lot more licenses. I have zero issues wth iLok now. I used to hate it, but it works seemleesly with all of my programs.

Make sure it is for the iLok, or you'll have to buy another bit of hardware and find a USB port to plug it into. Steinberg uses a different 'key' and as AT said, you could run out of USB port quickly.

hmmmm....the general feeling is that it's a dongle, and a PITA. IC it works fine for some, but not others, and that payment/stroke_compat issues are there when you stray from paths. Such are dongles I stay with the idea that the "offered deal" would not occur if the dongle was not part of it.. Which is to say that the original product is not that popular.

eternal85 I have had no trouble with my iLok for all my Eastwest/Quantum Leap products +1 I bought iLok to be able to install Ministry of Rock, absolutely no hassle and I've never had an issue with it. On the other hand I bought the Antares suite you mentioned from Cakewalk and STILL haven't figured out how to make it work in X1...but I haven't had a big chunk of time yet where I can really try and figure it out. If anybody knows the pathway to using Antares vocal suite in X1, please feel free to let me know!

I still have my original iLok from 2004 & in use all the time. Got the ilok2 free from buying Slate's . Transferred all my licenses to it & it's working fine too.

After many years of being afraid to use iLok-based software because of all of reported problems, I recently broke down and bought my first iLok in order to run the Lexicon Native reverbs. Since then I have added several other iLok'd software and have had absolutely no problems. In fact, I recently bought a second iLok from eBay for only $22 and it came with an authorization for a version of ProTools which can save me a couple hundred dollars on upgrade to ProTools 9. -e.B

There aren't too many problems w/ iLoks etc. these days. There were many problems originally, but like many computer hardware issues, they have mostly been sussed out. Most (as witnessed above) users have zero problems these days, but the bad rap continues with the legion of early problems. That would not be an issue with me if I was buying today. As far as the Anteres problems being unpopular - you could say that about much software. Some of the no-brainer stuff is very good, as well as "specials." Usually it is a product as a teaser to get you to buy the bigger version or to buy the rest of the products from the company. Sometimes it is because they are coming out with something new, better tasting with less calories and will do the windows, too. Doesn't negate a good value for the version that doesn't make the coffee, too. The Anteres stuff I've bought isn't as useful as I hoped, but it ain't dog food either. My favorite was the Kantos voice synth, but that was abandoned w/ Vista. Still, I've got a project that the voice changer software is integral. @
