It's still about $, especially these days.

Well, they had X1a to review it sounds like, but didn't experience as many of the probs so tho they mention "should be addressed in the upcoming update" they don't linger too much. Skylight gets a thumbs up, tho they point out some places where it has odd behavior. Their closing statement includes the line "sure to attract new users". Which if it were said two weeks ago would probably have caused WWIII on the forum. Now though, with the ship righted, I'm hoping it proves to be true.

If reviews were written from trying to create a real detailed project I would pay more attention to it. They may still be entertaining though.

Have you noticed that not a single magazine review has so much as mentioned the complaints among the user community? Had the reviewer been researching a personal purchase, he would have certainly made note of it.

Guess he doesn't specifically mention the community, but our very own RhythminMind wrote a review of X1 for TapeOp that certainly mentions bugs. I thought it was a pretty good review. Jon

I'll probably pick up a copy tomorrow, but it will be interesting to compare the positive/negative balance of the review of Sonar with the review of Cubase 6 in the same issue (although I have no intention of swapping DAWS to Steinberg). Cubase does however win first points by making the cover! In regards to Bitflippers comments, I have seen Craig Anderton reference this forum in his Sonar 'workshop' articles! Andy

I tend to think of the forum as a tribal hoard versus a community. Unfortunately, it's not just this forum where complaints have been voiced. I've seen them on every board where DAWs and digital recording are discussed. Even if the gripes are unfounded, it would still seem to be newsworthy.

This forum is the real thing ..can't get better reviews than in here. I couldn't disagree more. Most people come to a forum in search of fixing problems so there's a huge weighted argument to start with. I have no ideas of numbers or whether I'm anywhere close to being factually correct but I'd take a bet that the number of regular forum users to users of the software is in single digits percentage wise. As for reviews, I guess a reviewer can only look at software from their perspective and the time available for them to use it. Many of the complaints from users here is what has changed from 8.5. Putting that whole argument aside for a moment , if the reviewer has not used 8.5 regularly before they can only come at it from a clean slate, which in all probability is the whole point. How many regular Sonar users wait for magazine reviews before deciding to upgrade? I bet compared to the number of new users that decide to buy X1 from a review it is comparatively small. If someone has never used Sonar before they aren't going to know that moving menu item x to the newer view menus is a pain, or that CB is 'worse' than lots of small icons (which it isn't IMHO BTW) but you get the point. If there's nothing to compare it to a lot of the complaints just don't exist. Bug finding however is slightly different and if the review is of X1a I can't believe that some if not many of the bugs go un-noticed. Guess I'll find out when I get my copy and read the review. For those that are unhappy with X1 any review if negative is going to be greeted with "told you so", and if it's positive they are allegedly in CW's pocket.

wormser Is there an advertisement for Sonar on the page facing the review in SOS? No and not in the middle or the end either. There is also a confession at the beginning of the review that the reviewer is not a regular SONAR user and that he and SONAR have not got on well in the past. Should make for an "interesting" read if I can find time to read it.

FBB's right: although the forum is largely unfiltered - and that's a good thing - it probably isn't a realistic reflection of the broader user experience. Few log in to a forum to say everything going swell. Consequently, readers might get the impression that dissatisfaction is rampant when in fact it's a minority who are unhappy with X1 (according to A1MixMan's poll). A big minority, true, but a minority nonetheless. Still, a smart consumer researches multiple sources and any seasoned DAW user knows better than to trust magazine reviews. Any non-SONAR user reading this should not be swayed entirely by either magazines or this forum, neither of which offers a truly balanced view.

Had the reviewer been researching a personal purchase, he would have certainly made note of it. The Jan 11 Future Music review did point out bugs, didn't mention the user community but did say they expected the bugs to be fixed in an upcoming patch. The gave it a "The best Professional DAW for the PC" comment, which I couldn't believe coming from them because they seem Cubase biased IMHO. As for the SoS review, I think the other poster hit the nail on the head. The reviewer was not a Sonar user so he probably didn't know how to dig deep in the program to hit the bugs. I too am puzzled as to why the user community is rarely mentioned in these reviews. Not just Sonar, but the others as well. Protools 9 isn't exactly doing that great either with DAE errors and being very finicky about hardware. DUC has all kinds of stuff on this.

I tend to take their reviews with a grain of salt knowing that their perspective is way slanted towards their favorites and not those of us on this side of the pond. I have found SOS to be a lot less biased. I bought East West's The Dark Side (expensive) based on a FM review I read. I was hugely disappointed with the product. Great sounds, but stuck with their sample engine and limited selection of sounds for the money. By comparison, SOS was much more harsh. And much more in line with my feelings about the product. I know advertising always is the main source of income for these rags and that there is a tendency to not jostle the apple cart, but out of Keyboard, EM, SOS, FM, Guitar Player and several other mags, SOS is the closest to an unbiased review. And more importantly, they tend to be much more in depth. FM tends to put a review into maybe 2 pages. Look at the recent reviews on the UAD Studer plug-in. SOS devoted tons of pages to it. Head to head competition with a real Reel to Reel using various speeds and tape formulations. While I have not stopped traveling long enough recently to even check my mail, much less read the SOS review, I know I go into their stuff with a much more open mind. But yeah, tempus fugit, caveot emptor and semper fi. Whatever those mean.

Their how-tos are not exhaustive at all, but certainly a bit informative now and then. And I agree that they lean heavily toward the European market indeed. Almost every issue is loaded with Logic, Cubase, Live and less often Pro Tools. I could probably count on half a hand the amount of info relating to Sonar I've seen. But I also see a LOT more info on those 'other' hosts in American outlets than I do Sonar. So I dunno -- the skewing is interesting. But yep -- at the end of the day it's all about the bottom line anyway.
