I guess it depends on how low is budget. I got the original Avantone CDMK7 to replace a Samson kit and with I had skipped the Samson kit in the first place. http://www.avantoneaudio.com

Audix makes 5 and 7 piecekits, i would use nothing less... And even some higher priced mics dont sound as good... Especially the D-6 kick mic, D-4 tom mic... they sound amazing... also SM57s always sound good on snares and toms..... Go higher end on the over heads if you can.... Cheaper choices though would be C214, or AT2020s....

In my opinion, Vigilant's got it right. Those audix kits are the sweetest of the "kits" out there. And that's not even mentioning how good they really do sound. I use a D6 on kick every day. 57 on snare for rock every day. I've used the D4's on toms, but I don't own them. They were great mics. They're smallish...so easy to place. I currently use Senn 421's on my toms. I wouldn't even worry about HH or Ride mics. If you balance your playing well enough, you'll probably never even pull those up in your mix...the OH will get it. You can add those mics later if you want them...when you got the cash. You might look at going with a mono OH and a mono room setup. You could always add the other mics later to go stereo. I've been going mono OH now for a couple of years and no one complains. I do go stereo in the room, however. BTW...I've got a Mapex Saturn Pro kit here as well. Two mounted, and two floor. Love those shells. Oh...one other thing. Call Bob Heil at Heil Sound. You know...the guy who invented the Talk Box? Ask him about his rim mounted tom mics. Great price, and they KILL. They look a lot like the Senn 604's, but sound so much sweeter.

Just to clarify, I mean the D series kits, Not the fusion series that are a little cheaper, I cant vouch for them.. You Want The D6, D4, D2, I5 kit.... Not the F6, F4 ect... And those Heil mics sound pretty sweet to, I have used them as well....

Personally I'd get 4 decent mics that would sound great on tons of stuff instead of a kit. Like a decent pair of overheads and something for kick/snare. Then just learn some mic technique on how to use them and set them up in different rooms and you'll get nicer mics, experience and mics you can use on other stuff too. The Audix i5 is my snare choice, a decent kick, (Tons of great options: SM7B, Heil PR40, D12...) then some great overheads. EV 635a sound great dynamic wise and condenser wise a pair of Beyers, Audio Technicas or Avenson Audio's are great. Even the inexpensive MCA SP-1's are great for under 100.

That's good advice. 4 quality mics will never have to be replaced. If the OP is on a super tight budget, CAD sells a kit that's ~$250 (Kick, snare, and three tom mics). I've used these for live gigs... and they sound far better than you'd think (given that the total cost is about what you'd pay for a D112). Pair that with a decent pair of overheads (ie: Studio Projects B3)...
