Transferring via OMF format

I want to try another software but all my projects are produced using Sonar PE 7. Has anyone tried using the OMF to transfer projects? Do they open in basically the same way (number of tracks, effects on tracks, volume, panning, etc., provided that the VSTs used are in the plug-in folder)? I'm considering Reaper and Pro Tools (If only Sonar wasn't Windows exclusive. )

Check out my band's song on YouTube!

    Haven't tried OMF for quite a while now; but, we had a lot of trouble with OMF files; ProTools - Cubase- Sonar;

    Didn't seem to matter where the file started or where it was going: It was a 'crap shoot' (even transferring to the same computer utilizing the same plug ins)

    Transferring to a different computer with different plug ins: good luck!

    I found it less stressful to just transfer the individual wav files;
    I would make two copies of each (processed and dry)
