Sonar X1 won't record

I have stumped not only myself but the tech dept at Sweetwater . . . so far. . . please help.  Just installed Sonar X1 on my brand new computer (Dell, i5, Win 7, 32bit) - everything works but I simply do not get an audio recording line level (no meters moving) - midi recording works just fine but audio will only record a flat line.  I am also using an M-Audio Fast Track Pro.

To be sure, I installed X1 on my old laptop (Win7 32-bit) . . . everything works like a charm . . . so I unplug the FTP from the laptop, put in the new computer . . . Audio record will not work.

Everything is set in the new computer just like the old computer and yet the problem persists.  Yes, all the proper drivers have been loaded, I have tried both ASIO and WDKM modes/drivers, FTP is listed as the playback and recording device, all the proper in/outs have been selected, the device manager indicates that Windows is pointing to the correct M-audio driver and all the settings are the same as the laptop.  Aaaaaah!

Any ideas?

The only difference between the two setups that I can see is that in the old computer, the following is listed and checked under input drivers even though I have nothing connected to it:

M-Audio USB ASIO S/PDIF 3/4 Fast Track Pro

Since I have nothing plugged into that input, I don't see how it could make a difference but maybe this a clue?

Thanks for any response.

There are several things that could be happening.

Do you see any activity lights/meters active on the FTP?

Does your track really have the input set to the correct input?

Do you see the input meters in SONAR activating while you send sound to it?

Is it possible that SONAR X1 is not drawing a waveform but the audio IS being recorded?

Are your bit depth and sample rates set properly?

Have you plugged the FTP into more than one USB port?

Have you removed and reinstalled drivers after making sure that you will only use one USB port?

Answer some of those questions and people can help move towards a solution.

    Good Luck!

    all the best,

Thanks for talking with me.  I was just putting the finishing touches on my response to your suggestions which essentially said "Yes, I have tried all those things."  And I really had.  Then . . . on a whim, I decided to try one more thing.  I had tried multiple USB ports at the back of the computer with the same, useless effect but I had never tried one of the USB ports on the front of the computer.  Tada!  Everything works.  3 weeks of frustration has now disappeared.  If someone cares to explain, I would be happy to listen.  Is there something wrong with my computer USB ports or do some of them function differently than others?

One more question . . . I have two lines plugged into the front of the FTP.  When I use SonarX1 in ASIO mode, I can record in stereo but the input device says "M-Audio USB ASIO Line In 1 Fast Track Pro."  Shouldn't it say "Line In 1/2?"

USB ports are sometimes enabled/disabled in banks via Bios settings. Sometimes also a bank of Ports may need to be connected via an internal connection to a port on the motherboard. Lots of flexibility also means lots of possible gotchas - as you discovered.

    :-)

Just last week I was consulting to the director of a fines arts museum and she told me I was a "miracle worker"... I laughed and joked with her that I might put her statement on my resume.

    :-)

I don't really know why the usb port swap worked... but...

I'm very glad to learn you got the problem worked out!!!

    Great News!!!
