From my experience, old versions really don't take up much room, so no reason to remove them. I leave all my copies in place until I format my drive (or get a new system), then I only go back to the previous version (in this case it would be, 8.5 & X1).
You may want to take note of the plugins that come with various versions, but no longer exist. For instance, the Timeworks plugins, or the DR-008, etc.... Those can all be installed from a custom install of each version. You don't have to install the software, just the plugins from that disk set.
I just glanced at my folders, and I still have 8 & 8.5 installed along with X1. Those two programs (8 & 8.5) consume a total of 136 meg of disk space. Removing them would surely be more of a pain (possibly a nightmare) than simply losing 136 meg of space.
Just my 2 cents, I'm sure others will have their opinions as well
