It Might Get Loud
I've just finally gotten around to watching this video, "It Might Get Loud". Short review: it's good, watch it. I'd been sliding this film down in my Netflix queue for months. I was reluctant to watch it because of the premise: put Jimmy Page, Jack White and The Edge in a room and see what happens. My kneejerk reaction was: who do the producers think those other two guys are, that they should even stand in the shadow of Jimmy Page? Then I saw the movie, and now I get it. The idea isn't that Jack White is this generation's Jimmy Page, but that all three share the same love of the guitar and respect for guitar traditions, and each has done something with the instrument that's uniquely their own. Today I watched the whole thing again, this time with the commentary track turned on. I highly recommend doing that, as the producers supply a great deal of additional information that wasn't included in the documentary (which has no narration, only sparse subtitles). For example, I learned that the home-made one-string guitar shown during the opening credits is called a "Diddly Bow", and that it's the origin of Bo Diddley's nickname/stage name. You never know, someday you might be a contestant on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" and that could be the million-dollar question.

I thought watching the 3 of them awkwardly attempt play on the same song was a hoot... especially when Mr Page said, ah what the hell, and just started playing away and the other two just decided to watch in awe. I thought it was ok.... worth the time to watch... but probably not twice. best regards, mike

He may be no Jimmy Page technically - but he's much more creative than most "pop" musicians these days - Plus I own a silvertone amp from the 60's exactly like his - fun tones from that thing I tell ya

I hate to admit it, but i always thought Page was overrated until i saw this documentary. All the live Zeppelin footage I saw was either bad quality audio, or sloppy intoxicated performance. And I knew that the recordings could have dozens of guitars. I don't remember what song JP was playing in the doc, but I sat up suddenly thinking "holy c**p, that was ONE guitar part!" lol I did think the group jam was a bit sad, even though they're all extremely good musicians.

Don't underrate Jack White as a guitarist Bit! I love him. He may be no Jimmy Page technically - but he's much more creative than most "pop" musicians these days - I'd correct that paragraph grammatically as "...he's much more creative than most pop "musicians" these days..." And it's true. The guy is head and shoulders above the current crowd of fakers and frauds, most of whom cannot actually play an instrument at all other than to hold one key down on a synth while the arpeggiator runs. Did anyone else notice that he literally drew blood while playing -- the piano!

One thing that I couldn't help noticing was how he described growing up in a culturally starved environment yet he had 2 drum kits in his bed room. A lot of kids would enjoy that kind of artistic license. Tape Op had a fun to read interview with him this month... and BTW his engineer Vance states that he's an engineer that doesn't have a press agent, manager, or booking agent and is available for work at reasonable rates. Cool stuff. best regards, mike

Oh, there are plenty of paradoxes in the film. Note how at the end they all just get up and walk away. For all their professed reverence for their guitars, they don't even bother wiping the strings and returning them to their cases. Instead, their techs pick up after them. They are rock stars, after all.

Watched it last night, after seeing Bit's post. Very entertaining for me. There was a certain part of each player that was both enlightening and funny. The part where Edge played a riff thru his rig, and then played the same riff dry. The smile on his face was hilarious. Randy

Bit - Good choice. Saw this one at our neighbor's house. We liked it so much we made the kids watch it. If you haven't watched it yet, then I also recommend "RUSH, Beyond the Lighted Stage". Fun parts include the restaurant scene and Alex & Geddy trying to find one of the churches they played in. Ooooo, Palladia just started showing "Fender Strat Pack, 50 years of the Fender Strat"... this could be fun.... time to go.......

It did remind me of the Rush doc, when they revisited their humble beginnings. (BTW, that video made me a Rush fan even though I'd never been one before. Late to the game, I had to buy a whole bunch of albums to catch up. Figures, now that I've discovered them they're retired.) And anyone who liked that one should also check out the Tom Petty documentary, "Runnin' Down a Dream" by Peter Bogdanovich. One of - if not the best - documentaries of that genre. As with the others, you don't have to be a fan of the subject to enjoy the film. (But then, who's not a Heartbreakers fan?)

Thanks for that info, guys. I'm glad to hear they haven't retired and are still touring and recording. I'll be looking for the new album. Even though Vapor Trails is unlistenable due to the dreadful mastering, they redeemed themselves with the next release - Snakes and Arrows - which struck a much better balance between aggression and nuance. Fingers are crossed that Vapor Trails was just an experiment gone wrong and Clockwork Angels will confirm a trend back to sanity.

Rush is playing here in South Florida in a few weeks. Maybe I should take my wife double the number of females at the show ? My daughter (who is in love with Jack White) bought me It mIght Get Loud for Christmas last year. I really enjoyed it. The Tape Op interview cemented my respect for him. I am very glad my young daughter has an opportunuty to follow a real article with a great deal of integrity as a muscial crush / hero. JR
