I actually was watching the Satin Doll video this morning but didn't want to get tagged as an elitist old fart jazz guy so I figured I'd stay under the radar.

Thanks for the great links!

Ah c'mon Mike, was that supposed to be directed at me? Sounds it man. You'd only be tagged "an elitist old fart jazz guy" if you downed other styles and told the people you downed "you're just not intelligent enough to understand jazz". Since I've never heard you make a mention of that, I'd say you're the furthest from an elitist. Share away. :)

Danny

Mike is renowned as the Coffee House elitist, he can't help himself so we gave him the job.

He's cute as a cactus though all prickly on the outside and all soft and mushy further in.

Being a bit of an oik I like his diatribes into the fineries of good taste, an example, since I've known Mike I've stopped lifting my left buttock when I fart as I now know it's just a little bit uncouth to do that.  Besides I can get some nice Miles Davis tones now by keeping the pressure up down there.

Just keep him away from the drum machines though (particularly Boss ones), as he has a tendency to chew on them.

Hey, Mike you elitist old fart, you know I luvs ya...

You forgot to mention my incredible ears.

I can hear dinner before my dog can sniff it... I'm that good!!!!

I luvs ya too!

Guthrie Govan seems to really have it all, but I have to admit I wish he'd employ a tone that was a beautiful as the melodies he explores... and sometimes I don't understand why he can't work with the rhythm section a bit more integrally...  or find a rhythm section that can keep up and contribute to the whole of the song. It also seems to me that a player such as he depends on the highly compressed tone for sustain on the fastest tap passages but that that tone detracts from the soulful expression of the the more melodious stuff he plays. I guess that is why I was linking examples of guys that play lightning fast without all the compression and saturated odd ordered harmonics... to display the idea that fast playing and fret board competence doesn't have to be associated exclusively with a tone that seems less than ideal at times. If that makes sense?

all the best,
mike

Guthrie's definitely more known for his high gain antics, but he has a softer side...ha ha...
There are quite a few clips of his clinics and gear demos where he shows his wide range.
I couldn't find the one I was looking for but this one is pretty good.

@mike - good points about the tone, I also thought it was just bad video

@rld - never saw that video before!  Cracks me up when the police car goes by and he immediately nails the siren sound (and even adds a horn).  He just uses a guitar as an extension of himself.

Wow that Cajan thing was cool and Joe Pass is one of my favorites.  I love this one with him and Roy Clark.

Don't feel bad Danny my appreciation for guys like these by no means detracts from my appreciation for great Hard Rock and Metal guitarist such as yourself, to me it's all good and like a whole other instrument all together. I think perhaps all to often some folks misinterpret other folks tastes as them feeling elitist about about what they do. I also like most of the guitarist that you have mentioned except for one, Steve Vai. I have respect for the technicality of what he does, I just hate the way it sounds, the modes he uses..it all just seems like heartless noise to me after a bit. But I can hear the parts of your style that sound influenced by him that I find quite pleasant and unique I like hearing Steve Vai through your heart. I can think of a few other folks that has been influenced by folks that I'm not a fan of but I sure like what they took with them...Bapu's a fan of Frank Zappa...I am not, but I sure like the Frank in Bapu. I just love guitar, country, classical, metal, flamenco, it's all good. I love this every bit as much http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8FG7WVZUyg

Actually Grant, my feelings ARE the same as yours. LOL! The thing I like about Vai, is his control over the instrument. With extreme gain going on, that guy can really control every nuance. I'm not crazy about his tone and some of the weird licks he uses...well, they sort of lose me at times as being "weird for the sake of weird" which is cool, it's just really not my thing.

Mike: whew, good  because I thought maybe you were upset with me. Please understand none of my "old cat" comments were meant for anyone on this forum. I'm old myself. :) I just seem to meet these older cats where I'm from that take a stand when anyone has something to share that isn't what they are into.

I like Jazz, I'm just not so into the stuff that sounds like it's out of key for the sake of being out. Know what I mean? Like, my diatonic ears just tell me "whoah, ok I know that's jazz and there is a theory behind it and I understand it, but it still sounds out of key to me and not very melodic". Make sense? I've watched all these vids that you and others have posted...and there's not a bad one in the bunch. I've been a Jerry Reed fan for years...watching that one got me watching a bunch of his. I loved that guy both as an actor and a player. :)

Jonbuoy: LMAO!!!! That's all I can say there...thanks, I needed that laugh! :)

I think this guy deserves some equal billing ....

Stanley Jordan

I saw him playing on the streets on NYC as a kid with my brother. It didn't take him long to become recognized as a real talent.

I had his first album on vinyl... it might have been my last album on vinyl.

It seemed really refreshing.

Good catch!
