Not Sure Which 'Backup' (Clone/Mirror) Software to Get?


  First up:  Due to my current DAW setup which is rock solid (and I prefer to keep it that way, unchanged, because I'm almost done finishing my CD/Album)  I'm running Windows XP 32, SP2, and from memory I dare not up that to SP3 (long story, don't ask)!  Anyway, some backup software may not support Win' XP, 32, SP2.

  There are quite a few Backup solutions for me to consider such as:

. NovaBackup (apparently rated #1 for ease of use and reliability)
. DT Utilities PC Backup
. Genie Backup Management
. Acronis True Image (no need to install (portable) but there's been a few negative reviews)!
. Easeus Backup Tool
. NTI Backup
. Norton Ghost (no need to install (portable) can backup entire system but a little more complicated to setup/configure correctly)
. Power Backup
. Turbo Backup
. Paragon Hard Disk Manager
. Paragon Drive Copy 11 Professional
. DriveImage Free for personal use but no support, or from $100 for 5 licenses - for commercial use + support.

Also, it would be ideal to not have to 'install' (run as portable .exe) to do a complete backup and recovery.  My primary use is for 'Full System (clone/Mirror)' backup of my main C: hard drive (Drivers, programs, settings, activations)! 

  Which of the above ((Backup Program)) would be more suitable/ideal for my particular setup/needs?

    Interesting, I just got a very quick reply from Scott at Novastor.com in regards to running NovaBackup on Windows XP 32 SP2, and the short answer is; YES.   The slightly long answer is; Can successfully run and restore on SP2. Let me know if you have any further questions. Best regards, Scott.

    I might buy that :)

    Is anyone familiar with NovaBackup?

         Late Edit - Correction:

    Correction to the above reply from Scott @ Novastor.   I just got yet another E-mail from Novastor (Sean) saying that I need to have the system requirements for Novabackup to work properly.

    DANG IT :(

    Now that leaves me with less options, Acronis does not support XP, 32, SP2 either, so it looks like Norton Ghost seems to be one of the few backup and recovery prog that will support my setup (XP, 32, SP2)!  Oh Well!

    The backup from the above list is good list but not all the backup provide you the best backup service. You have not write the backup software which are the best. Like carbonite backup, iDrive backup, crashplan backup etc. This are the best backup providers.

    I and most of the techies I know (including DAW PC builders that post on this forum) use Acronis True Image.

    I’ve use Acronis True Image on all of my computers 32 and 64 bit with no problems. I also updated my old XP 32-bit music computer to SP3 with no problems and Acronis did a fantastic job when I had a HD crash on it.
     
    If you don’t upgrade to SP3 you other choice is to find a older copy of True Image, like a 2009 version.

    We have 15 computers and have found Norton Ghost to be very flexible and reliable. You can do a complete hard drive back up including the operating system, or a selected folder, or file. There are provisions for backing up any changes that have been made since the last backup and append only those files which really saves time.

    I also have 5 other backup software choices available to me that I have acquired over the years and used but Norton Ghost is the most flexible due to the options list. Also must say it has never failed or provided a corrupt or unusable backup or restoration. I have built one computer and after setting it up saved the image, then reloaded it on the next machine updated the license with a Microsoft utility and everything works without a hitch! A 20 gb backup takes roughly 8 minutes to complete and verify.

    I noticed that you have not installed SP3. Sonar 8.53 and X1 won't install unless you have the OS upgraded. I don't know what issues you have with SP3 but I have had no problems with the update. If all of your hardware can work with SP3 you should find it is more compatible with the rest of your computer equipment.

    If you purchase image backup software then I suggest you create an image of your current setup and attempt to upgrade to SP3. If it doesn't work you can restore the backup you made and everything will be back to normal.
     
    Norton Ghost supports all of the issues you have regarding SP2 and any older software.

    Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3) is the absolute minimum most computer software and hardware manufacturers are supporting these days. No good reason not to update to SP3... and as always, backup (and test/verify your backups) before any changes are made.
