How do I prevent Docking interfering with me??

When I double click on a MIDI clip to use the piano roll view I have to be very careful where I drag it to position it for me to work on - or the bloody Dock grabs it, shrinks it and puts it in a totally stupid place where I can't work on it.  How do I prevent that?  For that matter how can I just turn this ludicrous Docking tool off?  I can see no use for it in the way I work and yet it keeps forcing itself on me and it's driving me crackers.

    Skyline,

(Hope I understand your question) When I double click a MIDI it opens the PRV and it is, by default, placed in the Multi Dock at the size you last saved it in that Screen Set. You don't have to drag it out of the multi dock, you can just resize it within the Multi Dock by dragging the PRV up to fit the screen to your liking. I like to have just the MIDI clip showing above the PRV with most of the lower screen taken up by the PRV. As long as you don't change that size you can work on the PRV or collapse it for other tasks.

'D' then collapses the PRV within the Multi Dock and 'D' expands it again to the size you just had it. Shift 'D' will get you the PRV and the Multi Dock full Screen. Shift 'D' collapses it etc.

I have a Screen Set ('2' for me) that defaults to that PRV setting. So I press 2 and I get the MIDI track and the PRV set up the way I like it. Press '1' and I'm back to my tracking Screen Set.

...always good advice Scott.. but I was wondering from the OP, "Why drag the window?"

I think the action should be opposite. Hold CTRL to Dock a window.
It's like auto oping in unless you manually opt-out.

To the OP. Are you using X1a or 'b'? X1b has changed this behavior pretty drastically. In X1b you have to drag the window pretty far to get it to dock, whereas in X1a the window would start to dock from almost anywhere - hated that - and the cntrl key was a necessary evil. Now it behaves much much better and I haven't had to use the cntrl key for moving any windows (plugins i.e) since upgrading to X1b.

Not if you have a window that's already docked such as the Console View expanded, a slight drag of a window toward the top will dock what ever window you try to move.  Makes you wonder just who or if these things are tested.

Same here, MD on one screen, Track View on the other. Everything I need. And every time I open a new view I put it in the MD. I can easily drag it back out and then put it back in if needed. I have X1a, but doesn't X1b reduce the size the "dockable" part of the MD to the top bar?

I thought I read that in the list of fixes.

Yeah, but if it was that way, people would **** about having to do an extra keystroke to dock a window.

    Dan,

I see in your sig that you're using X1a. If that's true then the behavior you're descibing is also true but, from my expereience, "X1b has changed this behavior pretty drastically. In X1b you have to drag the window pretty far to get it to dock, whereas in X1a the window would start to dock from almost anywhere." If you're using X1b then my machine is working differently and requires a very definite drag all the way to the top of the open window before it will dock in the multi-dock. Again X1b work differently.

If you drag a window so it crosses the tab bar at the top of a view such as the CV it will dock window you're dragging if you release the mouse.  Instead of the hot zone staying at the bottom of the dock like it should it moves to the top of the expanded view.  Another screw up with the docked views is try dragging an FX from the Browser to an FX bin when in the CV showing the 1st tracks, and watch it scroll away so you can't.  Stupid stuff like that and the above that should have been caught and wasn't.

Many thanks, Scott, that's what I needed!
No doubt I'll get used to the new ways of having to work, but at present I feel like some of the other posters here, that maybe these sort of functions should work the other way around, i.e. hold Control if you want the window to dock.  Perhaps this sort of thing could be made user-amendable in Preferences like VST scan on start-up, metronome settings, etc.
    Right, back to the learning!

    Hey John,

Yep, there's definitely a learning curve with X1. And I do agree that it would be great to have every feature be optional. Hopefully, Cakewalk will add a lot more customization in future versions.
