Mp3-encoder..
I can't get the mp3 encoder to work with my copy of X1 Producer.. When I try to export as mp3 it says I have to register an external encoder for it to work. I've tried to install the Mp3EncUpg.exe from the Sonar-CD but that one wants med to insert the "Pro Audio 9" disc wich I don't have. What's wrong? =/ Cuz you get mp3 encoders included wen you buy Sonar, right? Or did I miss something?

get mp3 encoders included wen you buy Sonar, right? Pro Audio 9 was the last version to include the MP3 encoder. Most users download the free LAME encoder and use that.

...Hm... I can't get the lame encoder to work with Sonar... Why all these "registering external encoder" crap settings!? It's just confusing and nothing I want to learn. I just want it to work! With wave lab it's just to export as mp3 and in the export window you get all settings you need and Lame's there from the start... That's an update Sonar REALLY needs. Today you shouldn't have to go through loads of settings just to export mp3! --------------------------------------edit: Charlie: yeah i've had sonar installed for more than 30 days. what is cakewalk thinking?? it's 2011! why don't we get an mp3 encoder with the package?! totally crap! and to make it so complicated to use external ones... nice one cakewalk.. :/

it wont work unless you regester it and pay for it..understand? (not being sarcastic ) when you first load x1 the mp3 start activation..you have 30 days to use it.after the 30 days it expires.you must pay 19.00 to renew it fo it to work(i know i didnt like it either)lame is tricky..read it for awhile than try and install it..it works.my guitarist uses it..so does many other cakites sorry bro...edit...didnt see the bottom part of your post..you understand..best of luck dude

cheers :) no. there's nothing to like about it. like i said.. it's 2011.. the world is all about internet today and to not include an mp3 encoder (especially when everything else you need is included) is just so.. ..incomprehensible! i just don't get it..

That's an update Sonar REALLY needs. Today you shouldn't have to go through loads of settings just to export mp3! This would be great, but I think users have to understand why MP3 support isn't always included with some software. MP3 has an owner and it needs to be licensed. Lame and others are free for the general public, but when Cakewalk, or Sony, or Steinberg want to include it in there software there are licensing fees involved. We don't know what kind of fees Cakewalk is looking at, so I'm not sure we should be too quick to blame them for not including it "at no charge". There are choices we can make. - SoundForge, WaveLab, and many others are in the business of Mastering and Audio conversion so they likely think it is worthwhile to pay the licensing fees and pass those fees on in the sale of the product. Of course, those products cost as much or more than Sonar.
- If you don't want to pay the hundreds that those programs cost, you can spend $19.00 and get a license for the one that comes with Sonar. I could be wrong, but I believe once you buy that license, it will work with all future and past versions of Sonar.
- If option 1 & 2 are out of the question because you really want something for free, learn how to configure Sonar/Lame to work together.

Well - Sonar is not the only software that does that. In the past I used Nero Burning Rom 8, and you also had to buy a mp3 "licence" to use the mp3 encoder. When asking about that, they said the rightholders of the mp3 encryption patents (Fraunhofer Society http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraunhofer_Society) asked money for using mp3 encoding in a commercial product, so the consumer has to pay the extra costs to use it. Anyway - I use the free Lame encoder, and it works great. It is a bit work to set it up, but if done it is working fast and correct. [oops codamedia - you posted while I was typing.... and changed the link, because it was leading to the Dutch page - and I do not think a lot of people speaking that language here]

Many people are under the misconception that MP3 is free, and it isn't - especially to the software developers. Sonar should include an mp3 encoder at no extra cost IMHO! That said this one is free and fairly decent. http://www.nch.com.au/switch/ For converting .FLAC files you'll need to purchase a license, but other than that it encodes mp3's at no cost.

Unfortunately Geo524, it doesn't work that way. The lawsuits would fly if CW simply tossed in an encoder and didn't pay for the licensing from the proper source. Even on the link you provided it states "A free version of Switch is available for non-commercial use." MP3 encoding/decoding is often free for the public (non-commercial use), but NOT for software developers. The only way we will see a FREE MP3 encoder in Sonar is if one of the following happens. 1: Cakewalk swallows the MP3 licensing fees for every copy of Sonar sold. 2: Cakewalk pays for the MP3 licensing fees and passes it on to everyone - whether we use the MP3 encoder or not. The way it is now, the encoder is there but you pay for the licensing fee only if you want/need to use it. Edited for clarity.

Sonars MP3 for $20 is just fine for me. Works great and NO hassels. I think if you order it over the weekend there is still no issue to get it installed right off the bat and only takes a second and your off and running... With that said, YES I think with Producer it SHOULD be included at what we spend for X1. ;)

I guess there are reasons for how things are and maybe they've got it all figured out for the best. After all, Sonar's much cheaper than it's competitors and continues to be even if one chooses to buy the mp3 encoder.. I poked around some more with the lame configuration and figured out that I'd done everything right from the start. The reason it didn't work was cuz I continued to choose "mp3" as file format in the export window instead of "LAME MP3....." Maybe cakewalk could change the file format from just "MP3" to "MP3 Cakewalk" or something to make it more obvious that this option just is for cakewalk's own mp3 encoder. It would have saved me lots of time and confusion. :) Cheers!

cakewalk makes pyro audio creator - I have it - it exports mp3's and I never needed to register or anything - it just works... it was cheap I downloaded it from cakewalk - like 40 bucks I think so.... whatever - if they can include mp3 encoding and export in pyro audio creator and keep that low price and no registering ....then they can do it with sonar too if they wanted although this has been a topic for years and years in the forum it aint ever gonna change

For me what sux is that I bought the MP3 encoder in 2006, it's right there in my registrations, I download it, and it doesn't work, at least not in 64 thru and thrum, at least I can't get it to work in 8.5 or X1b (64). So, $20 every five years. I can live with that. Peace

hey Tree - the encoder is in the version of SONAR you install. You downloaded the activation code. If it doesn't work for you, you should contact Cakewalk support. Second, in general the SONAR encoder works well enough, but we have had problems with distortion introduced at specific frequencies at the 128 kbps rate, which is where we want to work most of the time. Because of that, we usually export wav files, then convert them with Switch or some program like it. regards, peregrine

I download it, and it doesn't work, at least not in 64 You have to contact Cakewalk if you are using SONAR X64, and they will email you a link to download the 64 bit version of the MP3 Activator. The MP3 encoder included in SONAR is a trial version. But once you pay for the activator, you wont need to pay again.

Hi Samuel - the code for the encoder is installed with SONAR. You get a 30 day period to use the encoder. After that, you have to purchase an activation code from Cakewalk. My advice is to try one or more of the free encoders available around the internet. I think they're more problem-free anyway.

A couple have posted to claim that an MP3 encoder is so costly that it would be too much to expect Cakewalk to include one. I recently looked into simple Windows streaming recorders. There are dozens of them. Shareware programs like that, costing as little as $15, manage to include MP3 encoding in their price. So the cost can't be very high, after all.
