Cryptic V-Synth Input Names are Absurd! (sp corrected)
Is anyone else wondering what they were thinking about... Right now I'm looking at the input tab of a Session Drummer 3 Output (multi-out scenario) It reads: Ss1S1O2O....... That's all that is displayed and obviously clicking on the dropdown arrow presents a proper list... How am I supposed to recognize this? this is absolutely ridiculous!!! Keni

I agree Keni. I'm not sure what the thinking (or lack thereof) was for these output tabs and who decided on which letters would appear? I've gotten used to it but I really don't get it.

They were trying to be cool and have it use selected letters to show more words.... It was pretty good for a while, but this is ridiculous... Other than the I can see that it shows the synth output (in this case displaying the 2nd digit of each stereo pair)... But trying to read it is not possible... I simply have to accept on faith that it's the right input... Keni

"Absurd" is the correct spelling.

Agreed about the confusing auto-abbreviations. They should instead have spent the time figuring out a proper way to convey this info to the user. It just adds to the overall clutter of the new UI and the way it all just seems to blend into one big mess. To me there is almost no more point in track folders since you can't tell where one "folder" ends and the next one starts (ok you can collapse/expand them but you have to strain to separate folders from tracks). Even a simple project feels like information overload (especially now that I am evaluating Studio One and its clean layout), but maybe that is just me .

It really makes it hard to zoom in quickly, visually, when working intensely. Especially in very large / multi-out plugin / fully loaded projects. Ugh. The track/bus/whatever abbreviated names are like old games on consoles that couldn't fit things due to resolution. Some people call us whiners for raising these issues. I call it workflow inhibitors. And don't ask me what I call them ;)

daveny5 "Absurd" is the correct spelling. Or "bsrd" in widget-spell.

I agree... Whiners? These others just don't get it... Because their' view is neat they think everything is rosy... But the fact of the matter is that work areas are not typically 'neat' areas... How could they be... There's work going on which means tools out guts showing.... It's difficult enuf to work to begin with... So when tools are taken away and things are made more difficult than they were before... So you tell them and complain... You have to let them know what's working and not... that's not whining. It's informing 'them' that things are not right! I was so looking forward to this release only to find myself 'not liking' most of what's been done. I can see why they didn't simply make the Prochannel as a plugin or many of us would simply stay in 8.5.3 and run PC that way... what else is better? Some new keyboard shortcuts that they could easily have added to 8.5.3 if they had decided to. That's no programming miracle. The tool is there and either menu or button... so assigning it to a key is brainless... the new interface is nothing but window dressing for me and currently it's still in need of a more professional design approach. Wrong to force a way to work... Right to allow users to choose how they wish to work. Sonar has been king there in the past, but too many issues (almost entirely gui based) are problematic with this release... and we're all paying the price for them to have the time to fix this stuff by X2.... If they don't the game is over for them and they will be left in the dust with all the semi-pro stuff out there.... They've got great stuff... now obscured by the vision of this new gui... I guess for those with two or three monitors, the new gui seems more important, but I'm wondering what the ratio of single-monitor-users to multi-monitor-users is? Keni

Yeah... They must think this is texting... They made the name fields smaller and in an attempt at making that small space accomodate a large name's worth of letters fit.... It ain't working! The names aren't much better than hieroglyphics for me... If it's just to have a place to mouse over and the tooltip exposes the real name, they could have avoided the name altogether and hovering the mouse over the left would be input and hovering over the right would be output... Wouldn't that be a royal pain! All this in the name of making this "cleaner" interface..... Priorities! Where are they now? In 8.5.3, this is all absolutely clear with no guessing... The name fields are large enuf to show realistic words! ...and I still have more info displayed at similar track size... I still can not buy into the X1 scheme. I will continue to refrain from using it for any of my clients projects as well as most of mine... So this is somewhat of a wasted update (X1 in general).... I guess that's why they made the price cheaper this year as they knew we would have to pay for another yearly upgrade before this makes sense and works reasonably bug-free.... I don't feel good about it and I feel badly as I have a lot of respect for the Cakewalk team.... Keni Keni

I wouldn't let this bother you too much. Longer and less cryptic naming will probably be a new feature in Sonar X2. Or perhaps they may wait until Sonar XXX <- That's what comes after 2 right? Sonar XXX The Sexiest DAW on the planet. Boy Oh Boy! Is it Sexy!!! Should satisfy the masses. It might not work out the door, but users won't care. They can just stare at their DAW. There is no sarcasm in this post! And other disclaimers as is and where needed. CWQA: only 200 bugs, and some stuff doesn't work at all? This baby is ready to fly! EDIT: Thought I'd better add a smilie. Also added this note to self: Broke your vow of silence on March 26, 2011! Gomer Pyle On Shame Shame Shame Shame Shame! Gomer Pyle Off

Bother me? What makes you think that any of this bothers me? ;-) All because it has disrupted my workflow and agitated me to the point of canceling all anger management ministrations so I'll be real awnry by the time X2 gets here and reminds me not to buy too fast.... they better have a demo ready before they release it this time! John I take it none of you have ever done any wiring with real hardware? Hi John... I'm afraid I don't get the analogy. I've spent most of my life building/wiring studios... How does this apply to a software not doing what it's supposed to? Keni
