Large Diaphram Vocal Mic

I have a very old (but not used much) Studio Projects C-1. I have no comparisons to make. It's the only good recording Mic I've ever had. It's from the first ones ever made, way back when. But ever since I replaced my ap2496's (2 synced) with the Echo Layla3G, something is off, quality wise. I think-or everything else sounds better now.
Anyway, Is there a replacement - going up in quality for around $500?
Thanks

    Stratman,
the Studio Projects C1 is a GREAT mike for the money. I remember finding out about it on this forum! Hard to say what would be better for only $500. But, I also remember a VERY faverable reveiw for the Rode NTK. I also have a SP T3 which was my main vocal mike for years.

I am beginning to think it's me and getting use to the Layla3G-after 10 years of the M audio AP2496. UI remember when I bought my C-1. Supposedly they copied a coveted Neuman mic and threats of lawsuits abounded. Not sure if that's just hype or reality. But I was on the original waitlist before they were even released. First 200 I think. So I keep trying to tell myself it's me-which it probably is.
    Thanks

If you can push your budget a bit, look for a used Avantone BV1. That is more of a male vocal mike than the CV12 which is more a female mic. The BV1 was used on the Robert Plant recent album and the CV12 was used recently on the Taylor Swift album. (Both going into a 1073 Neve preamp. Ugh).

The NTK needs to warm up at least an hour, works better with a mullard tube and generally has this little crisp spot about 4k and is a little grainy sounding.

If you can still find one, as they were sold on blow out, the Sterling ST79 at Guitar Center for $199 is a killer mic, Omni, Cardoid with roll off and it is really good but a bit neutral like a TLM103.

Another good one would be the Audio Technica AT4047.

    Gear: A bunch of stuff.

Good to know... I bought that Robert Plant album the week it came out and couldn't figure out why it didn't compare to Raising Sand.

All of those mics are crisp because almost every one of them uses a copy of the K87 capsule rather than the traditional capsule associated with the mic that the make believe name suggests it was inspired by.

May I recommend the Stellar CM-6? It's only available on eBay, you have to watch for it constantly, he usually only puts up 5 at a time, and they sell out in minutes. I would describe it as U-47ish...very accurate ,if you don't like how your voice sounds naturally, DON'T buy it! I have had the good fortune to have my vocals that I did with it (and done with X1 too) go onto an upcoming album release already.

You can see posts about it on gearslutz.com, search or go to http://www.gearslutz.com/board/low-end-theory/582472-stellar-cm6-clips-4.html

It costs $350 and seriously, I think he could charge 3 times that much...

Oh, and +1 to Middleman, always let a tube mic warm up for at least 45 minutes before using it

I have to recommend the Rode large diapragm condensors, just because I use them and they all sound great to me, YMMV.  Even the old NT1 is great I actually like it better than some of my very expensive non-Rode stuff, keep that C1 though I have that and the c3(I think maybe a c2)  I rather the C1 , I also bought it right when they came out.  POO-POO'd the idea, but I had to try it and its been very good to me.  I think there may be some user mods you can do to it, just google it.  im going to check out that stellat now...
