My X1 upgrade will have to wait, Win XP Pro SP3 broke my DAW.

I have had the DAW I built back in 2005 using XP Pro SP2 + zero patches forever and a day and life has been good!

I had read enough bad press on SONAR X1 that I decide to wait until the "it's stable" call was made; the X1b patch sounded like the update I was waiting for, so I sprung for the X1 upgrade.

When running the install it told me that I needed Windows XP Service Pack 3 installed as a prerequisite. So, I embarked on that journey. No sooner had I installed it and run Windows Update then all hell broke loose; nothing worked! None of my programs, even Media Player, were working right and I had not even loaded the new X1 software I can't point fingers anywhere except Windows XP SP3. It was strange in that Samplitude Master, SONAR, CD Architect, Sound Forge, etc. could all create new files and work perfectly, but could not open their old projects without hanging up infinitely and locking up the machine.

Anyway, I was at my wits end last night and finally tried a System Restore back to March 5th and that unrolled all of the Windows Update changes and it worked! I believe everything is working again; and just in time for a recording session tonight!

With the day job, wife, and kids in the loop I have very little time to devote to my music passion, and don't want to spend what little time I have in DAW fire fighting mode. So. I’m going to pass on loading the new SW until I build a new recording PC to replace my 6 year old dinosaur and will build it up in parallel over the next 6 to 12 months or so.

    That's a shame.

I had to install the SP3 update on my DAW and it went smoothly & quickly.

Quicker to install & run than to download, that's for sure.

Did you get the SP3 update directly from Microsoft?

Yes, I did. The culprit could have been the "other" updates that Microsoft Update pulled in after SP3 was installed. Perhaps I should have stopped there as one of the updates (that I now suspect might have been the problem) was an update for my triple head video card driver. The fact that all apps had issues with old projects but not new makes me think that it was somehow related tot he apps trying to pop up dialog boxes on resources that had changed.  That's probably why the apps could create and work with new projects, just not old ones.  If I'm feeling brave I'll do an Acronis image, create another restore point, and then try it again sans-video driver updates. But, then again maybe not, I hate the time-sink.

Yep, I can call my land line from my cell I guess... ;-) I have been building my own PCs since the flood.

Sorry you had issue with SP3, but I bet you're enjoying the new DAW.

It's time for me to upgrade too, the DAW has been around since 2005. In my case I need to do a "lifetime buy" of a Motherboard that will accept my legacy PCI Dakota/Montana cards and the latest i7. I found one (ASUS P6T Deluxe V2) so I may grab the board now and then just sit and wait until the hex-core i7-970 drops below $300. Since my old DAW is working again I do have time on my side.
